"Eh, I just think it's a little unfair of all the people who DO believe in God to deny same-sex couples those LEGAL rights, because of a religious issue" Dude, I think EVERYBODY missed the three or four posts where I specifically said I'm in favor of civil unions which would give them ALL of those rights. Are my posts being deleted or....? |

OK, then what the hell does it matter if it's called "marriage" or "civil union" then? As we've established, not everyone views marriage in the same way - there's a secular and a spiritual side to it. Governemnts can only legislate on the secular side, and so, the religious arguments are basically irrelevant here. As far as the secular aspect of marriage (the only part governments can legislate on) goes, the term "marriage" would make it a lot harder for recalcitrant states and courts and insurance companies and other people, to weasel out of actually treating same-sex and opposite-sex couples equally. Sine legislation is very different to implementation. (edited by Arwon on 03-18-04 06:09 AM) (edited by Arwon on 03-18-04 06:11 AM) (edited by Arwon on 03-18-04 06:14 AM) |

Er, I don't have the problem with gay people or gay marriages, as long as they don't trouble me. I really can't imagine just why a guy can be gay, though. I mean, nothing beats a nice chick. | |||

Leroy: I bet you can sympathise with Dykes, then To further my feelings about people who attack gay marriages... I'm not really sut out to fight for things... For activitists, I don't view their motivations as very critical to their lives. For me, this is my life. This is my happiness with Chad that is being threatened. If gay marraiges go ahead, then for the activists, this doesn't mean a big change to their lives. Whenever my relationship with Chad is threatened, it's my life that is being affected. This is why I get so upset about it, because I feel like I'm under constant threat from people who campeigning to have my rights taken away from me. |

Originally posted by Tuvai Something I've noticed throughout most debates (I haven't read most of this thread's yet) is that "man marrying a man" is wrong. Yet, the idea of a woman marrying a woman doesn't seem as hotly debated. Or is it just coincidence that most people use the term "man marrying another man"? When the idea of pedophiles, beastiality, and other taboo sexual fetishes out there come up, they're usually associated with gay men. This seems like a mute point, but I'm sure a lot of guys (and don't flame me denying it) fantasize about "girl on girl action", yet the idea that there's "guy on guy action" is just plain repulsive to you. My point? It seems that it's more acceptable to be be a bisexual/gay woman than it is a man. What it seems like to me is that by wanting to prevent gay marriages, there's a hope to make it go away. Sorta like seeing a snake, you know it's there, you can't make it go away, but if you hold your ears and close your eyes, you can forget its there. Sort of how gays are in society. They've made an impact on American culture now and by allowing them to legally marry would seem to most a step into the direction in which they won't "go away". Preventing the marriages is a way to hold your ears and close your eyes. To those who say that "God didn't intend it that way". God also said that you're not supposed to masturbate, have sex before marriage, cheat, or even wear clothing of two fabrics, but you don't see laws preventing that (well in most states). "Marriage is a holy matrimony", but is it? What about marriages in other, non-Christian cultures? Oh yeah, it exists. If they don't hold marriage to the same holiness and the same God, does this mean it's diteriating the meaning of marriage? Ya know, marriage isn't an eccelestial concpet thought up by the heavens, it's a human created concept. |

Anyway, gay people should marry each other. I don't know about other countries but in Sweden Gay marriages are allowed. And I still have to see problems with it. I mean... what's so dangerous about them? They don't bite or anything... And yeah, that's one thing that have been disturbing me. All "gay" people aren't men. ~_~ (edited by Kitten Yiffer on 03-18-04 08:40 AM) |

I really don't care, but at the same time, it's their own choice to do all that. But if I come CLOSE to any couple who has been married to the same sex, I will tell them to back up off of me and try to avoid them. But enough about that, thats not the subject at hand, it is about what other people, the media, think. I think the media needs to pursue this and see how far this goes... |

"To those who say that "God didn't intend it that way". God also said that you're not supposed to masturbate, have sex before marriage, cheat, or even wear clothing of two fabrics, but you don't see laws preventing that (well in most states)." Masturbation: That's highly debated and the bible never specifically mentions masturbation. At all. Sex before marriage: True but when does sex become a legal issue? Adultery: Also true (AND illegal, in case you didn't know. ) And wearing clothing of two fabrics? Yeah but it also says you can't cut your hair, shave your beard, or eat fruit from a young tree. But that's in the OT and those rules became obsolete to Christians when Jesus died on the cross. See, this is why people have a messed up view of Christianity. They just assume and don't fully do their research. |

Originally posted by Yoshi ARR Sadly, that kind of logic oft shows it's weakness. I'd come up with an example but I'm lazy right now. Try substituting in other topics to see what I mean. Once again, I'm saying that the government should just entirely drop a legal "marriage" and give "civil unions" to both straight and gay couples. Marriage can stay Church-side and therefore "sacred", while gay couples can still fit into society as normally as possible. |

My opinion on this matter is that gay marriage should be made legal, full stop. I think it was Lucrecia that said it was a matter of semantics - religion may have brought about the word "marriage", but if it were renamed "civil union" (or even "ajifjoiejfoe", for that matter!) would it be the same? Languages have evolved quite a lot over the last millennium or so, so much so that it would be difficult for most of us to read any literature from 1000 years ago in an unedited form. So who's to say that the church were the people who brought the word about? I don't think religion should play much of a part in law, either - there were times in the past when it did, and those were times when witches were burnt at the stake - I doubt anyone would agree with that nowadays. The problem with religion being involved in law is that the religion's framework could have been edited in the past, as well (they didn't exactly have multiple tape backups with password protection back in the 1st century, did they? Considering the authoritarian nature of several British rulers of later times, anything could have been slipped in or edited between then and now, and nobody would know - think of the world population's literacy rate back then...!) That's my rant over, for now, anyway. |
