So why does being more intelligent (which I still consider questionable and a matter of opinion/perspective) make us have souls and not other living and breathing creatures? Just because we can make advanced creations and ask questions such as "Why are we here?", that makes us worthy of a soul? "Alright, queen or not, the death of an ant is not equivalent to the death of a human." But why? 'Emotions - fear, joy, hate - are at the foundation of instict, but the advanced intellect that solely (heh, pun intended again) humans possess is what distinguishes us. That still doesn't explain why we have souls yet no one else. You're saying that we should just forget that animals have almost the same emotions as us yet we are smarter thus we have souls? I don't get it. |

Really to me a life is a life, and nothing can change that. Why wouldnt an ant's live be equivalent to a humans. As far as the measure of intellegence goes that is definitely an issue that would be different with everyone. In my opinion Hitler was a genius, you cant be a moron and go and take over half of Europe and literally annihlate 2/3's of a continents people. The things he did were horrible but the way they were done wasn't a bunch of random ideas. (edited by mrmenz on 07-10-04 06:52 AM) |

I wouldn't quite say Hitler was a genious, I'd say he was just very charismatic. You can get people to do pretty much whatever you want them to, if they like you enough.

Like was said before, this is a question where your religion directly influences your morals. I'm a Christian and the book of Genesis says that God gives us dominion over all animals on land, in the air, and in the sea. The Bible also says that we have souls. I believe it to my death, and I would have you see what gives a human a soul.

Okay. I'm going to be the first that I've seen to just say, forgot religious convictions when you answer this question. Let's start jsut answering yes or no, and why. I would save the human. I would do this because I put more importance on the life of any human, than on the life of any dog. I have four dogs, and I like dogs. I just think that a dog's life is not worth a human's.

Affection also impacts one's decision. If you truely love your dog, and you really don't like the human, I think most people would go forth and save the one they cared for the most. If the questions was your birth mother or your dog. A majority would be the mother, thats saying though that the person making the decision loved their mother more than their dog. If you hate your mother and loved your dog, you'd most likely go for the dog. But as stated above: Religion has an impact. So If I had to chose between my dog who I love, and between someone I didn't know. I would choose the human in God's name, and if possible save both. Though I saved the human's life, as Yoshi Dude said, I would feel like dieing because I love my dogs. Its truley a matter of affection or religion. Someone could truley stay stuck on this subject with no definate answer. I feel that everything is equal and has a life. But as I am Christian, I must go with my God's word that Human's rule over animals. So human life would be thought as more valuable. But if you where to put a serial killer in the lake vs saving your dog. Who's life would be more valualbe? I'll tell you what, I would choose my dog of a killer. I believe in capital punishment, but against abortion. You have a life to make your decisions. But now I'm jsut getting off subject, its just so fucking complicated to make a right decision when it comes to life when you get life and religion and affection mixed in... shit I could create another thread about wether or not deciding on taking a life is right or not. Its just so fucked up... just one of those things that you really have to think about if you love life and God. |

If my cat who is one of my best friends and my neighbor who never spoke to me were downing I would go for my cat. The event is purely conditional to me, if it were my mother and my cat I would go for my mother first. Since im atheist religous beliefs would have no affect and I would save the creature who has the most importance to me I cant say anything more than that. If you want to answer truthfully you can't forgot your religous thoughts because they make a huge role in who you are and what decision you would make.

Granted I have the choice of saving them or not, I would just run the other direction. Unless, of course, the person drowning was good-looking (same rules apply for the dog). I haven't been in any situation where I would have to evaluate the lives of humans or animals, so I can't really decide. I think most animals just mind their own business, and do their own thing... and eat and kill eachother. Perhaps you are worth more than the animals you kill and eat, because you consume it and the animal ultimately becomes you. Wow, this is pretty deep... |
