I got into a discussion the other day with some kids (i.e. high school students) about whether or not a dog

Simple :Human Life > Other Animal's Life

Answer 1: I'd save the person I don't like. I wouldn't want to have this death on my mind after that.

Answer 2: Almost an infinite number.

1. I'd save the person. My dog knows how to swim and could easily get to safety. It's not like it was a river or something.

Seriously, though, the life of an animal is still a life. They're worth equal amounts.

2. Contrary to what I just said, an ant's life doesn't matter because ants don't really have brains of their own. They live to serve their queen and don't have independant thought.

But can we honestly say Human > Animal? Granted we should be concerned about ourselves, but how can we possibly know if that

I think I should been more precise:
Human > Most Animal Lives
Because Humans don't reproduce as fast as other animals. But Kyouji Craw brought a good point I forgot: A thinking animal's life is equal to an human's. Another point is that most dogs know how to swim.

And anyway, I don't have a dog so how could I see it in a lake...?

Ok, the situation you described is absurd, but I do value the life of some mammals over others.
Of course, it's the cute animals like Cats, Dogs, Hedgehogs etc that I find myself favouring over pigs and cows.

But of course, all mammals apart from humans naturally know how to swim, so I'd go for the guy

Of course no. But some animals are less important than others. I'm aware that we need animals to live to, so sometimes we need to care more about them than about ourselves...

Uh... I have no idea what he was trying to say, so I'm just going to say... Yes. I dunno, it's not right to simply let a species go extinct. For some reason. I dunno, when we get down to that it feels like we're playing god, trying to keep everything alive... =/ I don't really think something on the endangered species list is worth more than a human life, but... I dunno, I just can't answer that question.

Okay...here's what's been bugging me for some time...how in the heck can an animal or a human being's brain power be measured in terms of a power of a computer...I just don't see the logic in it because they aren't even under the same process of information...and it's man and machine anyways to begin with.

As for the question, most dogs can dog paddle, I'd probably save the person first unless the dog was hurt, then I'd probably try to save both simultaneously, it's a life on the line so it matters either way...but it wouldn't probably mean the same if it was like an ant or something.

As for ants to one murder, probably counts as one for each time you step on one, but like anyone's going to hold it against you. I doubt very seriously that any religion's going to try you over the death of a fly via fly swatter from you and that you'd have to make in up in purgatory by being a fly being swatted to death millions of times.

Thing is, we've got the role of being the pinnacle race of animal out there, I mean c'mon, we're human, we're egotistical like that. So obviously, not too many people are going to be after you for a murder of an ant moreso than a human being but that doesn't mean it isn't humane if you make your life out to drill ant's nests out of pleasure either. Really, there's not that much of a straight answer I can give you other than respect, I mean would you like some big ant dropping on your house? Probably not, but I doubt very seriously that anyone's going to be interested in hearing a 'save the ants' campaign when most are considered pests to begin with.

You don't deserve to have an animal if you think this way.

Yoghurt Duck:

"Who are you to say that"
I'm me, a guy who has his own opinion, whatever you agree or not.

"wtf. What does reproduction has to do wit that?"
I'd prefer to kill something that can reproduce itself very fast than something that reproduce rarely (I wouldn't kill a whale, even for getting Bill Gate's money). The reproduction pace is one of the factors that determine how fast a specie can by endengered.

"Stop contradicting yourself."
I'm not, I corrected myself by saying that an animal capable of thinking is equal to an human. Kyouji Craw made me realise it.

"Just stop replying to this topic...."
I would've but you asking me all these questions.

The human being has a soul, while the dog does not. If the question was to be based solely on morals, it's only right to offer help to the person first. I don't care how much you love animals, or how cute they are, or how long you've known Rover, it's ridiculous to equate an animal's life to that of a human. And don't give me any of that, "Well, humans are animals!" Perhaps biologically we are animals, but we are in nothing short of an entirely different realm in regards to mental attributes.

That's not to say that the Animal Kingdom is our personal playground. The wanton destruction of life, human or otherwise, is wrong, though the taking of a human life is more severe.

No we're not, dorkus. Dolphins are smarter than humans, they simply lack the limbs required to create tools. As for what you said about animals being soulless, die. Now.

1. If you saw a person you didn't like (but didn't especially hate) drowning in a lake, would you save him before you would save your dog drowning in that same lake?

No, I don't think I would save him o.O I would save my beloved dog before any human being XDD Hey, what can I say? I'm just an animal person...

2.If something like a ant's life is less than a human's how many would you have to kill to equal one murder?

I don't think any kind of numbers of ants could equal one murder. Ants are infinity. They couldn't be extinct if the world was on fire.

Yea, I second that, that's pretty cold regardless of religious beliefs and whatnot. I don't know where you get how anything living doesn't have a soul (if such a thing exists, if nothing else, call it life force).

I don't recall ever being called a "dorkus" before. Anyhow, I have no hard evidence to support my statement, though I can't imagine where you've fished up (heh, pun intended) your information.

Alright, there should be some sort of fine print in this thread's seed post that warns a potential respondent that, upon offering an asked-for opinion, one is prone to idiotic flaming from a "dorkus" like Kyouji Craw. Since no such warning was offered, I'll simply stand by what I said earlier. Animals are soulless. Perhaps my perception of a soul is not the same as everyone elses but, then again, not everyone here believes in the God I believe in.
