I recently finished created a ROM hack for Super Mario Bros. for the NES. I would really like it to get some exposure to the public, so I'm introducing it to you. Changes: - All levels (1-1 through 4-4) have been completely changed. - Graphics changed to look cooler - Title screen is different - Font now has a shadow effect. - It's like you're playing a sequel to SMB! If you are interested in giving it a try, please follow the link below. I would also really appreciate feedback. http://mariohack.cjb.net (edited by NMorgan on 07-07-04 03:29 PM) (edited by NMorgan on 07-08-04 12:04 AM) |

I haven't tried it yet, but I felt I should tell you that you should release it as an .ips patch, and not in ROM format. There are several good reasons to do so, first and foremost, though, because linking to ROMs, or a site with a ROM, is simply not allowed here.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to take out the link. Looks decent, but you can't post links to sites hosting ROM's. Take the ROM down, replace it with an IPS (I recommend Lunar IPS for your patch needs) and you can link agayn.

I'd also like to see some screenshots. Words simply don't do a hack justice, especially for frequently-hacked games like SMB. You need to entice a player into downloading your hack, and "graphics changed to look cooler" just isn't doing it for me, sorry.

The graphics are changed to look like Smb2j. While there's nothing wrong with that (as the graphics are notably better than the original game's, after all), you really should not advertise them as "graphics to make it look cooler." And "font with shadow effect" is just a fancy way of his saying "the Smb2j font." Did you take the Toad sprite from another hack? I could swear I've seen it used elsewhere.... Is there a reason you've only changed the first four worlds? Certainly there are plenty of unused levels you could use to make more.... Why is 4-4 unchanged, save for Bowser throwing hammers now? As for the levels themselves, they seem a little... well, bland, design-wise. Then again, you're trying... I just recommend experimenting a bit more with the level design. Some ideas might work nicely; some might not. You seem on a good path, anyway, and can possibly do some great things with practice. Don't feel too bad: I made some hacks that weren't too great in the beginning. The earliest, and worst, were never released, but some of my others (the first three Super Mario Bros. hacks, the Super Mario Bros. 3 hack, and others) could've used more fine tuning on my part, and for whatever reason, I still have them available for download, if for some reason someone actually wanted to play them. You'll get better over time, though, so don't give up; I can see some potential with this hack. I've improved over time myself. I'm pretty proud of my two Bugs Bunny hacks, my last two SMB hacks, and the SMB3 hack I'm currently working hard on. Heck, my Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle hacks are the best Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle hacks in existance, not that I have much competition . Just keep working at it. |

The graphics don't look a whole lot cooler, but you have done some sprite editing and bg editing a little bit which does look a little nicer. Overall its quite fun, nothing special, but a solid hack none the less.

To Frank15: Yeah, I used the SMB2j font. I'm not nearly artistic enough to redesign all of the sprites myself, plus I don't think I would ever have the patients. The Toad sprite is from the SMB2 character select screen. The reason why I only changed the first four worlds is because I took _a lot_ of objects from the last four worlds and put them into the first four worlds. So I poured all of the ROMs space into the first four worlds. I reckon I could have done up to world 6. Possibly in the next release, if there ever will be one. World 4-4 is unchanged because I am a new rom hacker and I didn't feel like messing with the castle looping data. I tried messing with it, but it confused me greatly. So I got lazy and left it the same. If you think the levels are bland, then that is your opinion. I think they are fine and they are staying the way I have made them. Thanks for the advice and the feedback. I really appreciate what you have to say, weather it be good or bad. To Heian-794: No. It's the SMB2j font. |

Originally posted by NMorganThe easiest, and best, thing you could have done was just to get rid of the looping data altogether. I never cared for the looping castles, personally, but if you couldn't change them to how you liked, you could always just change it into a "normal" castle. Originally posted by NMorganYou are absolutely right; it is just my opinion, and I certainly would not expect you to change them. It was mostly advice for any future projects you may do. Certainly, this was your first try at a hack, and it's not bad for a first hack . Originally posted by NMorganYou're welcome . S'up NMorgan? I just finished trying your'e hack & lemme tell ya's, for a first time hacking, it's decent. I like the way you put traps on the mushrooms. Thats slick, I used the GFX from SMB2J on my first SMB hack, I never released it cause people might not like it. Well, nice job on your'e hack. (edited by Googie on 07-07-04 09:34 PM) |

...Googie?! I've been to your ROM hacking website before! Actually, I was there earlier today, but I was there like a week ago, too! When are you going to release a patch of your Earthbound Zero hack? I am interested in this because I am working on a hack for that game also, and I am quite curious to see yours so I can compare it to mine I've been working on mine for four days now. If you want to see what mine is like so far, follow the link below for the ips patch. http://home.comcast.net/~NicholasSMorgan/crap/smbsaga.zip (edited by NMorgan on 07-08-04 02:23 AM) |

Looks interesting enough. If you want me to add it to the currently nearly empty queue for my reviews (see this thread for more information, whoo) tell me Anyway, only gripe I have is the frame on the bottom of your page, and the fact screenshots were in JPG. ARRGH. |

The frame at the bottom is annoying because I have to scroll to see a single screenshot; personally, i'd reather just have it as a BG. And PNG works nicely for screenshots: with JPG you get compression... Oh, and you never answered me about reviewing it... it looks kind of good, really. (the link.) The screenshots aren't that different, but they do show promise. I wouldn't say they're a lot cooler however... *Downloads* |
