Nintendo DS and Sony PSP prepare to engage in Mano-A-Mano, hand-to-hand combat! I heard of these new handhelds where you can play N64 and PS2 games! With this new competition coming out, I hope Bill Gates does'nt get in the way and create a portable game system the size of a SNES. Nintendo DS is expected to be released this fall. Sony PSP is expected to be released early next year (around January). |

... No, they can't play PS2 and N64 games, respectively Also. For movies, PS2's battery life is a pathetic two and a half hours. That'll go out long before the one ring falls in to Mount Doom, BTW. (edited by Kyouji Craw on 07-06-04 10:09 PM) |

Huh, guess the world is gonna undergo another mindless hend-held swindling disease. It kinda bothers me though... We can play more than that on our computers and laptops alone (thanks emulation in general) yet people insist on buying worthless pieces of plastic for $85 a piece. Dime a fucking dozen eh? |

Let's NOT get into a piracy argument, shall we? I think he meant that we can play a lot more games on the PC, but people LIKE carrying around a portable system to kill some time when on the bus/subway, waiting between classes, etc. Lord knows I was thrown for a loop when I saw a girl waiting for her class a few months ago and kicking ass in SFA3 for the GBA. I think the PSP has a very good chance of succeeding but if the price point gets out of hand... |

I think it's all a matter of which one has the longest battery life. Simply just look at the history of handhelds; the old Game Boy defeated handhelds that were WAY better than it, but since the Game Boys battery life was incredible, it defeated handhelds such as Game Gear (required 6 AA batteries which only lasted about 2 hours) and atari lynx because their battery lifes didn't last long. Yeah, I realize Game Boy had alot of good games and a huge collection, but I'm sure it would have never made it anywhere if it's battery life lasted less than 2 - 3 hours. Better yet, why don't they make better batteries? There are a lot of things I can relate to this topic right now but I'm not gonna get off track here. If I am gonna play a game, I will bring a laptop and kill people on Quake II on the airplane, bus, whatever. The point is, if you want a game, you want to be able to play it as long as you want without having to pay a fortune buying batteries. And some games are'nt even worth a crap believe it or not... Picture this: You are stuck in the same level looking for the red keycard and having to replace so many damn batteries? You replace them 4 times yet you get nowhere in the game. I think they create these cartridge things nowadays to increase the life of the handheld. I dunno, this whole thing sorta confuses me. (edited by The_Raven on 07-07-04 01:34 PM) |

Picture this: No one spends an entire battery life finding a key card. DS' battery is around 10-12 hours. PSP's is a solid 10 for games, and a quarter of that for movies. It has different rates of battery depletion for different functions, but games are it's longest and movies it's shortest. And if the game sucks, why did you even buy it in the first place? There are reviews for a reason. What really irks me is the fact that you claim you have to spend a fortune on batteries. EIGHT BATTERIES COSTS AROUND A DOLLAR TO TWO DOLLARS DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE. Each system uses two batteries, IIRC. Unless you play nonstop, you won't be spending more than 20 dollars on batteries a year. And you're forgetting electric bills. All things considered, playing games on your computer costs a lot more than buying batteries and playing them on a handheld. (edited by Kyouji Craw on 07-07-04 01:58 PM) |

Anyone has a list of announced game for both of them. I know that DS will be able to play GBA game(like every gameboy) but I haven't seen any official game for it.

Erm... Obviously nobody's heard of rechargeable batteries and battery packs. Both of which are FAR cheaper than buying packs of batteries all the time. |

Actually, Colleen, battery packs cost several times more than batteries, and recharging them takes money in the form of a higher electric bill. They cost more, it just costs you from different places. And rechargeable batteries need their own chargers... I think you can see where I'm going with this. And if you want to go the AC Adapter route, the whole point is that they're portable, and tying them to a wall negates the usefulness.

I don't think my parents ever noticed a huge jump in their electric bill when I recharged my GB battery pack. Whatever floats your boat. But I don't want to go to the mall every once in a while to dump 60 batteries into the special disposal. |

Well it wouldn't be a huge jump, but it'd still require several years of usage to make it worthwhile. By which time it doesn't work as the next system is out and it doesn't fit it.

If you want to take it from someone who has played both the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS... I find the DS to be a lot more appealing. Sony PSP is trying to be everything it can at once -- Nintendo's new handheld is strictly a game system. I'm not really going to contribute anything else to this thread for now... except for this picture of a beat up Sony PSP. |

It takes 2 batteries. That's roughly about 40 hours there, genius. Seeing as how when I'm playing my max gaming, I play about 5 hours a day you'll be buying them once a week, and since the average 8-pack of AAs here is ~5 bucks that's about 25 a month for batteries, assuming you're me, and play it 5 hours a day. What fun. Cough. Anyway, the Nintendo is sticking to the tried-and-true formula; games only. Hey, it made the GC cost 50$ less than the (su)X-BOX and the PS2 Oh, lest we forget we'll have to buy movies again for the PSP (since it uses some wierd universal-shit-disk or something) and what if they don't make a certain movie for it? Oops. *waves home-made DS flag* |

Actually, generic Kirkland Signature batteries (From your local Costco Wholesale Club) are some of the best batteries you can buy. I am not kidding. Back to...was that girl running with nothing on her bottom half? O.o Erm, sorry. Anyway, I presume Sony's marketing executives are smart enough not to imply that their competitor's product is only for dorks and 10-year-olds (HELLO NOKIA I'M TALKING TO YOU AND YOUR TACO-SHAPED BOMB OF A CELL PHONE), thus insulting their target audience. That will automatically make sure the PSP sells more than the N-Gage. As for whether it'll topple the DS, hard to say. I'm not really up on the specs of either system, although if the DS is backward-compatible, that'll go a long way toward assuring victory for Nintendo. |

I would have to say DS. It's build-in Wi-fi / LAN connectivity to play either with people waiting for a bus across the street or miles away (if you are in a Wi-fi connectivity hot-spot) had me sold. Also one of the major attributes, the dual screen is a brilliant feature. (edited by Gb boy on 07-08-04 09:01 PM) |
