A few questions about this file...number one, what does it do precisely? I imagine it has something to do with images, because when I try to run GIMP it crashing saying it caused an error with this file. 2. Why would it cause GIMP to crash? 3. Why does it say that this dll is in use when I try to overwrite it with a newer version?

Any information regarding this would be great.

EDIT: Specifically, GIMP causes the error when it tries to load extension_script_fu, as near as I can tell. I run Win ME at the moment.

What exactly is the error caused by msvcrt.dll anyways? Are talking page fault or something?

Additionally, I looked through Google...but I couldn't find much...only that extension_script_fu is 'A scheme interpreter for scripting GIMP operations'.

I would think that whatever version of msvcrt.dll is screwed up in some shape or form but I'm not exactly sure, because as far as I can tell it just might not be able to give you access for whatever reason (possibly a virus, but I'm not aware of ones that infect specifically msvcrt.dll, so, you're up in the air on that one).

I would say to try restarting it in DOS mode, deleting whatever msvcrt.dll is in your directory, wherever, and replacing it with the new one (if it is, in fact, a new one)...but I'm not exactly sure if it'll work either...in fact it may just be the program itself gone loopy.

MSVCRT.DLL is a run-time DLL that, I believe, works in creating the video. I had similar errors in Winamp with this DLL back on my old comp and it forced me to use 2.81.

[thinks]

OH! Additionally, you don't by chance have Visual Studios or Visual C++ 6.0 do you? That's what set it off for me in Winamp...that could be the problem.

So as you can see...there's a ton of different things that could be wrong with it.

Hmm.

Actually, I installed VC++ not too long ago on this comp. I could always remove it, although GIMP worked fine (With it installed) once or twice before it started freaking out.

Now that I think of it, I haven't run an updated virus scan in awhile, so it may be a good idea.

EDIT: And yeah, it seems to be of a general "this program caused an error in msvcrt.dll and must be closed" nature. I guess that's a page fault...*clicks debug* Ooh! Assembler! Let's leave that alone...

You can overwrite it if you boot into DOS. Windows Me blocked all access to real mode DOS, so you'll have to use a floppy disk to do so. (Open up Add/Remove Programs, make a boot disk, copy file to floppy, restart)

If VC++ doesn't like the version that GIMP does... choose weather you want GIMP or VC++, I guess.

UPDATE: Tried removing VC++, ddn't work. Tried removing and reinstalling the GIMP, now it's complaining about an entirely different dll file, iconv-1.3.dll, not even being there.

Now attempting to download and install the newest GIMP (Gee, what a novel concept) and see if that fixes anything.

EDIT: That seemed to work. Now, here's a question. Is there an easy way to make rectangles, a la Paint? A little easier than selecting a ractangular region and filling it in I mean.

Uh, are you talking about making rectangles in GIMP? GIMP's a bitch. I'ts buggy and it looks awful. But, it does have its share of features. Nothing Photoshop can't do however. As for making rectangles, what could be easier than the method you described. If it has a pen tool, select your forground colour and select rectangular pen. Then your shape will automatically be filled in with the foreground after you finish setting its dimensions.

Never mind, I got it. It's a long, fairly involved process actually.

GIMP is powerful, but it's pretty obvious it really wasn't designed with Windows in mind.

It's a Scandanavian open source project, of all things, so what can you expect. I'm surprised it turned out as popular as it is, actually. It is quite powerful, but it is so buggy. It's like that 1964 emu.

Edit: It's also quite a bitch to install (GIMP).

By "Scandanavian", you must mean UC Berkeley's eXperimental Computing Facility. The GIMP's native file format is named "XCF" after the place it orginiated.

The GIMP was created for Unix like systems. The Windows version probably isn't as thoroughly debugged because most GIMP users use it with Linux. I have GIMP 1.0.4 on Linux, so I can't say for sure regarding current versions.

Hard to install? Only if you're using Windows. All I need to do is type "apt-get install gimp", and wait for it to download. After that, it is ready to use.

Some programs hate Visual Studio. NO$GMB wouldn't work after I installed it, until I switched it to Win98 Compatibility Mode. In your case however, I suggest upgrading your OS to something like DOS 1.0 WinXP, Win98SE, or some form of Linux if you can handle it.
