How about making it so people who just registered see none of the topics as "NEW" ? (He'd only see topics as "NEW" when the last reply of a topic is more recent than his account...) I got dumbasses on my board bumping old ass topics, and coming up with the excuse that it was written it was new... |

I think it has to something with the people's cookies which are stored longer than a "session" with your IP unlike when you are logged in (then it simply goes away when you mark a forum or all forums read by hand).

Something like that... But what I meant is to make it so that when a newbie logs in an account he just made, no NEW indications shows... |

But can't you just temporarily ban the idiots doing that and threaten to IP ban if they do it again? Seems like it'd be easier to do so anyway, and you know if they're dumb enough to do that they'd just come up with some way to screw things up anyway even if you got this done.

It'd be better and a lot more convenient if that'd prevent them from making that kind of shits, instead of requiring an admin to take actions about it... And even if you don't take stupid newbies in consideration, making it so no topic show as new when you just arrived is "cleaner" and less confusing, I guess. Sure, you could say newbies would just have to click the "Mark all forums read" link when they arrive, but very few of them know what that link does. |

Make so that when a user register, all the forums are marked as read. (in login.php, make something like if lastactivetime="" then print ). I don't know if the variable for lst online time is lastactivetime. It's easy to do it, though. Even you can do it. |

Even if that is done, normally a new user should read the FAQ; so the most effective way might be to include that question into the FAQ and to put a page before register.php which says something like "By registering an account you accept the (link) rules, Please read how to use the PM and 'Mark forum read' feature before posting in threads blindly" to prevent something like this. On the other hand, at least for me, I didn't bother too much about more or less NEWs, because I was new and read the threads, matter no fact if old or not (but not posting in old threads, sure). |

There isn't an excuse for bumping, it's just common sense, reading the 'last post by..' thing. If they don't have that, they deserve a ban.

Doesn't sound like a bad idea, just have it do whatever the 'Mark All Forums Read' link does.

Some new people are like confused at first, and do a couple of stupid things until they get used to the way things work and all. This way that'd at least prevent them from doing one potential stupid thing. It's not a matter of "babying" anyone, since once that'd be set up, you'd have nothing else to do, as the system would work by itself. And as I said, even if you don't take "stupid newbies" in consideration, it'd still be cleaner and more conveninent to have things this way... Just my opinion though. |

For me it that oldschool usage/treating to mark forums read by hand it is more convenient and accurate than auto-marker like in phpBBs or else. You log in into your phpBB or other one, read one or two threads, change the page, come again and probably the forum is marked as read although you didn't read the other "new" threads. Maybe it would be very nice to make it user-selectable if someone prefers the classic way - marking threads read by hand or a more modern way - auto marking read after you left the proper /../forum.php?id=xx page I dunno know how easy or hard it would be to code such a thing; and if that requrires much more work to make it selectable for each user; if a additional query and variable fits or not That setting could be set to "Auto-reading" feature by default for a new person then |

You could just edit the redirect to "mark forums read".

i fell victim to this as well, HighSorceressDiliah (or whatever it is, forgive if i spelt it wrong) warned me about it too. EVERY topic that i see on the board says new and this gave me the idea that i could post around freely as i pleased.

Have it so that, as soon as they register, it marks all the foums read. It'll just take a MySQL query.

is there any way to make it so that after 'x' amount of time instead of saying new it says old or something? not old but i guess a more appropriate word is current. the ones that have passed and aren't recent anymore would have like passed on it. the new ones would obviously have the new on them and that way people can differenciate a little more.

this would actually be horribly simple to do..... all you have to do is when you register..... for each forum insert into forumread ctime, forumid simple.... |
