More of a Software question, but Geocities is the popular choice, although the bandwidth limit is bad.

Don't:
1) Use Freewebs.
2) Use Angelfire.
3) Use Geoshitties.

In this day and age, you're far better off getting ANYTHING that's not free. Paid hosting is getting cheaper every day, and even the cheapest will usually provide services far above and beyond whatever GeoCities, Angelfire, Tripod, and especially Freewebs can provide: no linking restrictions, no banners or popups, and no lame URL are just a few of the benefits. For example, I pay approx. $10-$12 a month to HostRocket for 330MB of space and 20GB of bandwidth, and that plan is a couple years old...their current economy plan gives you 50GB of bandwidth and 1GB of storage for the same price. Since most people don't even need that much, you can find even cheaper hosting with fewer unnecessary services for $5 or less. Who can't afford that? (Oh, and HostRocket has free hosting, too... [/shameless plug])

I wish more people would examine their options before whining about how much their free hosting sucks...

Well, I pay $7.95 a month for 800 MB of space and 40 GB of bandwidth at Lunar Pages. So far I haven't had any problems with them. I'm also paying $14.95 for domain registration per year. That's not bad -- I don't mind paying that much for quality webhosting.

Let's see. If you need pics, photobucket.com. If you want pictures for forums and a site, do not use any Lycos ones, when you try them you just end up with "this picture hosted by" and a picture of which lycos thing you used. Just remember, always use photobucket for pics, and otherwise, lycos works well.

For a while, OldDH was the best. However, due to their not making much money off of hosting, they've cut back on free services. Their free service was better than some paid hosting. FTP access, 4 MySQL databases, 750M of space, no ads, etc...

You can't complain! It still beats all other free hosts. I'm not sure waht their services to free users is, but I do know that they still don't put any ads on your site.

Yeah, good freewebhosting is a thing of the past these days. You're better off just paying for a host monthly. Unless you can find something good at freewebspace.net I doubt there is anything good out there. Get Erk's, $5 a month is not as hard as it may sound.

http://www.fuitadnet.com

For $5 a months, you could get 3 GB space and 25 GB bandwidth, which is VERY nice. I plan on using them when my plan with RCTHost.com is up.

If you are going to host a page, host it on Http://www.freewebs.com.

Give it a domain name at http://www.dot.tk.

And host downloads at like angelfire, or something of that nature.

Some people don't have credit cards and that though - or others simply want to pay a flat fee for a year's hosting. And I'm sure places offer deals like that if you look.

If you want something basic just for a personal site without any scripting, then go with a free site. Don't pay $5 a month if you're only going to update once a week and you only get 50 visitors/day. But to each his own.

Personally, I don't like free commercial hosts. They always have some catch.
