In the register page, I think you should make people type their password twice, to check if they didn't mistype it...
This way there should be no more people who can't login or post because they fucked up during their registration...

(Unless having to type your password only once when you register has a "nostalgic" feel to it as well...?

Good idea. This should be added to editprofile.php too, so people can't change the password without typing the old one.

Hell, redo editprofile.php's password system entirely. It's possible to edit with just the encrypted password. Not good.

Maybe there should also be a rule that people who haven't made at least 10 posts in their first month get deleted.

Not at all.
Registration must not be bound with a certain amount of posts in a specific amount of time.
Maybe I register on help desk, I have a problem, post five times in one month; then everything runs fine until the next problem which occures four months later.

Remember, not everyone is active that much or values the posting counter that highly.

YOu can just forget when i said "Good idea.". All the forums have 0 posts users, and they just get deleted with the time. Like, when i firstly registered at TEKhacks, all i wanted was to send some PMs.

Hm... All the forums have 0 posts users, indeed, but that's not the point.
Also, the fewer 0 posts users, the better...

Having to type your pass twice is something "standard" to me, although some of you don't think it's all that useful, it has more advantages than drawbacks. The only "drawbacks" would be 1. Someone would have to bother coding that 2. People would have to type their password twice to register (not that much of a drawback, is anyone lazy enough to complain about this ?).

Maybe you should have to post 5 times in the first month of registration to keep your account. After that, it won't be deleted. Those are my thoughts.

That is by far the stupidest idea I've ever fucking heard.

"LETS MAKE PEOPLE POST OR GET DELETED DUH"

I speak from experience: Back when I was new, I went quite a bit without posting in months. Many months I did that-- if I got deleted every time I didn't make 5 posts in this board, I sure as hell would've fucking left. There are a few users I see who register but just lurk often, just so that they actually have a user name, and there are also users who don't post often for reasons they can't help.

A more fitting solution I thought of would be deleting users with less than 10 posts, but only if they haven't been active in over a month or so. That might work... mabye 5 posts or less. That'd still leave the lurking-but-not-posting users.

Argh...

This thing of at least 5posts/month would make people spam. What is so wrong with 0 post users? Just delete them if you don't like them.

I had thought about starting a thread suggesting the same thing, but I forgot about it. I had registered on several other AcmlmBoards after the DB was wiped. At least once I thought I had incorrectly typed my password into the registration form, but I had typed it wrong in the login page.

Requiring the current plaintext password to change the password will not add any real security. The plaintext password could be recovered from some forms, such as the new reply form, and used to change the password.

I don't think that accounts should be ever be deleted. Even banned accounts that were created just for abuse.

I can understand you're againt the 5 posts / month idea, knuck, but what about mine ?

Concerning your example about the fact you registered on some board just to send PMs, well, if the idea I suggested was accepted, you'd still be able to do that if you wanted to. You could keep your account to 0 post if you really want to, BUT at least you'd be sure you can use it and log into it as your password would be correct.

I have my options set to keep me logged in anyway.

IN any case, I'll have to second Knuck's question of "what precisely is the problem with 0-post users in the first place?"

Meh, you're missing the point.
This is to avoid people who just registered to be unable from logging in or posting because they mistyped their password.
NOT for people who already got an account they use.

pfah, I've suggested this to acmlm and he says it's a "good idea" and that it's going to be in 2.0 or something. so... well, come back in a few years.

And no, it's not hard to code. Just an extra check for $_POST['pass1'] === $_POST['pass2'] or whatever.

Oh yeah, and... on kiwibonga's board, you can just stay logged in with the cookie, but to edit your profile, you need to re-enter your password... which is good. I believe someone mentioned that in here.
