Here's my suggestion, anyone that is IP banned not allowed access to even see the site. If you want to stop the lamers from being so damn annoying, you gotta step it up a notch. Realistically, I can't see anyone having objections to this... But, after reading this, what is the general thought?

Yeah, it's already like that. Unless you meant faking a 404, which seems kinda pointless.

No, not a 404, a 403. Forbidden access... access denied... etc etc etc. And it's not a matter of someone seeing "you've been IP banned," it's a matter of not letting them get that far. I made my case.

That would be stupid. Banning an IP by this method would take ages. What is wrong with a message saying that you are IP banned? A 403 won't make the board's penis bigger.

It wouldn't take ages, just adding a few lines in a htaccess file can do that...

Well, I'm not aiming to make the board's penis bigger. I'm doing "hey you, you're an idiot, you've been an idiot, go away. you aren't wanted here." [/evil] I don't think they are one in the same, but I don't really know myself. I'm too tired to think right now, it's almost 4 am.

It would be possible, but not by using the IP ban list from the MySQL database ... they'd have to be set specifically in .htaccess, unless I make the board fake a "Forbidden" error page

I think, "IP banned" should fit like here too; just what a moron deservers ... well if it is a mistake like in the initial post, an email or IM can be dispatched to Acmlm or another admin anyway (via the address on the main page probably)
Another way would be to implement email validation via user; so a moron who wants to register a troll account, first needs to create a new email address if he spammed and his main account was banned. Back on topic

IPs can be changed or you can use a proxy, so IP bans should be done by hand imo instead of banning an entire range and probably excluding more people

I got caught up in a broad IP ban once. During November, 2001 I tried to load Kuro5hin, my favorite site at the time. netstat showed that the TCP connection just hung in the SYN_SENT state, as if packets were just being dropped. It turned out that Craig McPherson, a notorious Slashdot troll, had been harassing another user that had a background at Slashdot. I was using the same ISP as Craig and was caught in a ban.

Would it not be possible to use the header function in PHP to do the 404's, instead of an htaccess file? Header details.
