My main problem with 3.1 was that File Manager always crashed when using it. As a result, I became friends with DOS quickly. |

The only things I recall ever having problems with Win 3.1 and 3.11 was the beginning of the BSoD. That would be a bitch when it crashed DOS apps because most times it locked up. Old computer lockups were freaky looking sometimes too...I remember a lot of times the video went weird and looked like the screen was 'bleeding' red or something with the lines that went across the screen. First time that happened when I was 8 or 9 I was like...oh shit...what did I do. Hell, before Windows 3.0 was on my system I used WordPerfect Office 3.0's DOS Shell...apparently we had the disks the entire time (along with Windows 2.x or for those that remember Windows/286) but my mother never installed it. That's when I proclaimed how 'gifted' I was when I installed Windows 3.0 by myself when I was that age...promptly fucking the hell out of the entire computer later on by going too far with the DOS Help and using MIRROR and UNMIRROR. Did wonders to the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys and gave a buncha cool lines...well...cool as in unexpected...pissed my father the hell off. Eventually a few years went by and I repartioned the 32 and 8 MB hard drive to a full 40 and had a 286 all to myself when we got a Packard Bell (Hell)...and of course a 1.2 GB hard drive far surpassed a lowly 40 MB hard drive in late '95 And 16 megs of RAM beat 1024K...and 133 MHz passed 12 M...you get what I'm saying. |

Which really make you wonder how computers will be in ten years. I have Windows 3.0 somewhere on a floppy, I installed it. Looks like Win 3.1, kept that it has uglier icons for stuff. And I swear there was less things too... |

It was several years ago. |

DOSS-hell was slow, that was the biggest thing it did bug me about. But you could run severeal programs at the same time. There is Windows Nt 3, (there is no Win NT 1 or 2) it's a 32 bit os like Windows 95. But looks like Windows 3.1. Some Windows 95 programs run in that OS. Someone got Mozilla running. |

DOS Shell wasn't slow. It was just... ugh. Clunky and really, really bad. They could have improved it in so many ways. Kyouji: That version of NT was the first 32-bit OS by Microsoft and came out before 95. |

Precisly, when that NT was released. Windows 95 was just a early beta. There is early beta screenshots of Windows 95. They had severeal types of GUI before they did stick to the current start menu. | |||

That's how it looks now but it's really more of a DOS emulator than a pure DOS environment now, I believe. Was 98 the last version of Windows with a pure version of DOS? |

Go into run, type command. Command.com is supposed to look more like DOS than cmd.exe, but command.com dosen't support long file names in Win XP. The best DOS emulator I have seen is a unoffical one, works like pure dos even if it's windowed. (but it's slow...) Dosbox, search after it on google. xP |
