First off, wow. Just wow. The only thing I can think of negative to say about this game is that we didn't get the "Navi Trackers" part in the North America release.

That having been said, this game is great. I've only been playing it single player, and it's still great (though I'm sure it's even greater multiplayer, as everyone says).

First, let's mention what makes this game different from the standard Zelda game. There's four Links (One player you control all four, two player each gets two, three player (I think) one person gets two and the others get one, four player each gets one). The game is broken up into eight "levels" (worlds), each of which has three "areas" (levels). Weapons are only held temporarily, and you have only one at a time (AKA if you have the boomerang and you pick up the bows, you put down the boomerang). Rupees are (in a way) replaced by Force Gems. You have no magic meter or arrow or bomb limit. Gameplay moves from the TV screen to the GBA/SP (or to the "GBA Window" on the TV when you play the game one player with a controller instead of a GBA) whenever you enter a house, cave, some dungeon rooms, etc. You start of each "area" with no weapons (well, you've got the sword, but you know what I mean), three (full) heart containers, and no Force Gems.

With those things noted, the game plays like a classic top-down Zelda (namely LttP), with some areas even being in a side-scrolling type style (best example would be Link's Awakening/DX). Some elements of the 3D Zeldas, such as the rolling thing (anyone whose played OoT knows what I'm talking about), work their way in as well. We see more in the way of huge swarms of enemies than ever before, but with four Links, you should be able to handle it .

The story (which I'm not going to go into TOO much detail on because yes, there is a story and yes, there are things that I could spoil) is nice, standard Zelda fair.

The Force Gems need to be gone into in more detail. Like I said before, they in a way replace Rupees. You aren't exactly going to be buying much, but the few places where monetary spending is required (shooting gallery, fortunetellers, and pick-a-chest games) it's the Force Gems that are used. Force Gems are way more plentiful than Rupees ever were, and for good reason. Your group must collect enough Force Gems (2000 in the one player game, probably the same in multiplayer) to restore the Four Sword's ability to vanquish evil. Or, in more relevant terms, to destroy the barrier at the end of the stage (which must be destroyed to end the stage ), and to do a Hurricane Spinning Attack (like in Wind Waker when you spin around a lot and then are dizzy for a second). The Hurricane Spinning Attack doesn't replace the normal Spin Attack, you just charge up a little longer than you would for the normal Spin Attack. Additionally, in multiplayer the best player for the stage is determined by who collects the most Force Gems and defeats the most enemies (and in 3 or 4 player games, you do some voting for who was the most helpful and who was a pain in the rear).

And then there's Shadow Battle, which is pretty well easily summed as you fighting your friends Zelda-style

Well, it comes with one. So if you already have one (like I did) you've got two already.

I have three link cables but just two GBA's... getting another one sounds so fun.

The multiplayer aspect sounds fun, as we have two GBA's the 2player mode will be enabled.

But how does it work with controlling severeal links?

Time to correct myself, it seems in two and three player games, the remaining Links (blue and purple in 3 player, just purple in 4 player) can be stolen from your fellow player by picking them up.

Basically, Kitten Yiffer, through formations.

Normally you're in what is called the "Break Formation" in which you just control your main Link and the other Links under your control follow you, not taking damage or doing any actions or anything.

The "Wide Formation" and "Long Formation" are pretty well the same thing, with wide being all your Links lined up horizontally, and long being vertically. Here all Links' actions are preformed in unison. Meaning if you tell them to swing the sword, they all swing their sword at once, etc.

In the "Box Formation" the Links form a square, two wide, two long. Again, they're controlled in unison.

The "Cross Formation" has each Link facing a different direction, with their backs facing each other. Again, controlled in unison.

While not technically a formation, there's also "Split Up" which, like it sounds, allow you to control one Link at a time with the ones not being controlled just sort of staying where they are (don't worry, they can't be harmed ). This is good for, say, when there's four buttons in opposite corners of a room that need to all be stood on at once.

The formations are controlled by the L button (or, if you wish, the Y button if you're using the Gamecube controller for 1 player). Hitting L when in the break formation will pause the action and bring up a small sort of window above your head to let you choose Cross, Wide, Long, or Box. Hitting L when in one of these four formations (or when split up) will bring you back to the break formation.

Once you're used to the formations you'll likely wish to use shortcuts for changing formations. Holding L you can press up to go into Box formation, right to go Wide, down Long, and left Cross. Additionally, if using the Gamecube controller (for one player only ) the you can move the C-Stick in the apporpiate direction to change formations.

To go into split up mode, simply hit select (or either X or the d-pad on the Gamecube controller). To switch between Links in this mode, simply hit it again and you will go through the cycle (Green->Blue->Red->Purple->repeat).

May sound like alot, but it's actually quite intuitive.

We subscribe to Nintendo Power, which recently ran an article on this game. When I saw the pictures and read about the gameplay, I just had to run out and buy it...and I've been addicted ever since. I stayed up until 6:30 a.m. last night because I couldn't put the game down.

It's awesome how they managed to reinvent Zelda gameplay, taking the basics from an extremely well-done game and introducing new concepts without "fixing" anything that wasn't broke. For instance, only being able to carry one secondary item at a time could have been a major pain in the ass, but it's implemented well because the game puts item stashes where you'll need them. These actually become part of the puzzle-solving process - if you're stuck, one thing you can do is look around for a useful item.

I haven't tried multiplayer yet, but single-player mode is definitely worth the purchase price.

Damn European release dates.

The formation idea seems intresting. But it does remind me of certain RTS games.

I got the game at 2:00 pm today...

The time that I put down the controller was 6:00 pm... its that addictive....

All of the puzzles have the classic Zelda feel... including the rooms of doom (The ones in which just about every object including the floor flies at you)

The return of classic zelda items is nice too. Controlling your group takes some getting used to. Once you get the hang of it though its a piece of cake.

THE GIANT BOMB IS FUNNY! Its extrememly funny seeing this giant bomb of doom appear on screen and it says "GIANT BOMB, RUN AWAY"

This game is going to occupy most of my time tomorrow I can tell... From what Ive seen, this game gets an

I have the original japanese version, and trust me: If you don't absolutely HAVE to understand the extremely thin storyline*, import this game. Navi Trackers is very entertaining, and not that hard to understand (the in-game tutorial doesn't help much, but there's a nice guide on GameFAQs). It's kinda like Mario Party, just fun. And without the die and board. And very few minigames (less than 10, I think, and you'll only play 2 each round. And the first one is almost always that stupid memory matching game that's really easy to mess up on (Stupid skulls).) Not releasing this game outside Japan is one of the bigger mistakes Nintendo has made recently. (Yeah, there was that damned boring sailing in Wind Waker, but that wasn't THIS bad.)

*Basically: "Evil guy releases eviler guy and kidnaps Zelda and some other chicks. Go from point A to point B, collect shiny stuff, and kill evil stuff. Save chicks and kill evil guy and eviler guy. And save some knight guys and recover some rocks." (No, I didn't play the original Four Swords, but as far as I know, it was pretty much just "Kill evil guy and save Zelda". "Evil Guy" in the original is known as "Eviler Guy" in this game.)
Spoiler:
Oh, and I think Gannon is involved, since the idiots on GameFAQs don't mark spoilers.

I beat Hyrule Adventure on Sunday, and I got to try multiplayer on Wednesday. I generally liked it, but I had an unfair advantage because I'd already gone through the game, and I found myself getting impatient because you have to wait until everybody else to go to the next screen, and the rest of the people I was playing with would keep messing around with each other and I'd be sitting there wanting to move on. I think multiplayer is best if everybody you're playing with has the same level of experience with the area as you do.

Or if the game could randomly generate levels - couldn't Four Swords do that? (Basically there were X amount of rooms but you never knew where you would head next... right?)

It's $60 here. Not worth a purchase I think... maybe a rental.

It's also possible that it worked like Diablo II, which from my experience loaded one of X predetermined levels at spots.

But I'm talking out of my ass here, given that I've never played Four Swords.

Well, remember Colleen, it comes with a GBA/GCN cable, which (upon checking futureshop.ca) appears to be 20 Canadian dollars.

Which is totally useless for me as I don't have a GBA.

And considering how FF:CC has a GBA cable (I believe) and it's only $35-40 right now...

I have FF:CC, kickass but I tend to get tired on the game quite quickly. And I hate wearing that crystal bowl thing.

Kickass Multiplayer, I have only tried with two people so far...

Crystal Chronicles is fun for me, cause we have someone who believe it or not likes carrying the bucket (can't imagine why, but he's wierd like that).

I played Four Swords with four people last Saturday. It was fucking amazing! The level of cooperation required between the four people was excellent, and it was just damn fun. We were always throwing each other out of the way to get force gems, and stealing items, and beating down enemies. It's crazy when you can play with four people, I heavily recommend it. The only problem I had was it took some getting used to when you had to switch between the GBASP and the TV screen, but when you get used to it it just becomes second nature. I also had trouble keeping track of which Link was Red Link and which was Purple (cause I was red), but other than a little confusion because the game moves really fast, I had a lot of fun. Just watch out for whoever has the Fire Rod, Hammer, or Bombs, it gives them the awe-inspiring ability to piss you off.

Sorry to bump a thread, but GOOD GOD, I LOVE THIS GAME.

I'm like a combination of Blue and Red.

I'll actually grab people and throw them away from the Fire Rod if I get the chance just so I can get it for myself. Good god, I love that item. If anyone gets in my way, I won't hesitate to torch them. If they get too far a head, I'll kill them and take their force gems. But it's all in good fun, I know they'd do the same to me. On multiple occasions they have That's why I torched the field they were in.

Short of the Fire Rod, my favorite weapon is Pegasus Boots, as it gives me the ability to beat anyone to any chest or gem.
