This topic started to grow in the Lakers' thread, but I feel it should have it's own thread.

The whole issue with the Lakers, sadly reminds me of what happened when the Marlins won the World Series back in 1997. I high paid team, then torn apart after, in that case, winning the championship.

In a way, it pisses me off, you know. These people get paid so much money, and after a while, they keep wanting more money, their heart filled with greed. I mean, if I could play damn well enough to be in the pros, as mentioned by Toxic, I wouldn't go and whine about it. Sure, I would have a bit of an ego boost, but that would be about it.

It seems more and more these days, that people play for money now, and not for the love of the sport or the fans. Now granted, they're people at there who still care, but there numbers are quite fewer than the rest of the lot.

It just baffles me.

I know we all want to be rich and famous and have people name their kids after us, but really...

Who cares how much you make? The minimum wage for pro sports is more than doctors make, and doctors are pretty well off.

I mean, I hear these things like, they have a house, a beach house and a winter house, and some many freaking cars, and all that jazz.

And you'd figure that since they get extra money in for doing commercials and stuff, that they would be content enough.

Just think, that we pay people who's job is to entertain us, more than people we trust with flying planes, powering cities, defending our country, and more than the president of the goddamn United States (in some cases).

Yeah, but in this case it's not because they can't afford to keep the Lakers around - people are just ticked off.

Worst case scenario is that they lose Shaq and Kobe, but even then they have the funds to sign some guys to fill their place. They won't drop out of playoff contention, but might have a rebuilding period.

Many players in AFL teams take pay cuts if a) their team needs room under the salary cap, b) their team is out of money (like my bulldogs) or c) if they are underacheiving.

If I play a bit of defense for the devil, I'd say you need to keep in mind that a doctor can practice for say...40 years or so, a sportsman usually only has 10-15 years in them tops...and only a portion of that will be at their 'best' (which is usually their period of highest pay).

I agree with you though - and it seems far worse in some games than others.

The NFL is pretty bad. Some people make over 10 million a year, and personally, I think that's ridiculous.

What The Wrong'Un said.

Yeah, some people in the sports world are rediculously overpaid. But you have to consider the average lifespan of such a career choice (The average NFL career lasts UNDER 3 years, for instance). And a lot of times, that's almost all they're really good at.

I happened to read the foreword of John "Bradshaw" Layfield's Have More Money Now on his website. He said that before he became a professional wrestler, he played some three years of what amounted to minor league football. While he had budgeted his money perfectly to that time, he had taken it for granted that he would be playing football the rest of his life, so he was shocked when he got cut after that third year and realized he'd have to get his financial status together pretty quickly (He had $27 to his name at that point..as he said, he had budgeted PERFECTLY for that time, presuming he would always have a job). I imagine it's a similar situation for all but the highest-profile athletes once their careers are over and they're..well, not out on the street per se, but have to join the so-called "Real world" post athletic life.

10 Mil a year in the NFL? That's just sad to what teachers and doctors make. I think they should be paid the most but that's just me. All the jobs that deserve to be paid more don't get paid much at all.

I've never thought about the short career span but they should consider an injury may happen one of these years and not always worry how many cars and houses they're gonna have in the near future. My mom told me that sports people and stuff are paid so much due to demand but demand is just sad.

Another factor to consider is that, believe it or not, the players get their fair share for the most part. Yeah, a lot of them make millions, but that's only a small percentage of the BILLIONS they generate for the owners and sports as a whole.

So it's not just the players that are out-of-touch with reality, really.
