Bye Phil (among others)

Just like that, one of the best teams in the league is basically done for. Shaq wants out, Kobe is testing free agency, Phil is out, Malone is out...who's next? Luke Walton?

After losing to the Pistons badly, it was inevitable, really. I would've bet money on it. To think, it could happen in only one year.

I had the feeling that this would happen once the season actually started anyway. They can't pay that much for all those players, especially for what they are asking. Whatever happened to the love of the sport, eh? I would love to play in a pro sport and not get paid that much....unless it was football, man, those guy can take a beating. Anyway, either way, if they would have won or not, they wouldn't be on the team the next comming year.

I don't get why they need so much goddamn money.

Let's just hypothetically say that I'm the new center for the Boston Celtics. As a rookie, I make a mil per year. The first two years in the league I tear it up, make the all-star roster, etc.

Instead of being a whiner, I would keep that contract so that my team could get more quality players and have a shot at winning a championship. I just don't get people some times.

Right. Because obviously to be a star you need 43 cars, instead of just one that you drive.

In any event, direct money issues towards the newer thread.

The linked article didn't mention money at all - just that the coach and owner had mutually split.

What're the salary caps for Nba anyway? Why does Shaq want out? Why is Kobe unhappy, or is it only about money with him? Is Malone Karl Malone, and if so how old is he now?

Can you give me a bit more of this info before I jump to the conclusion it's a money issue?

It's not really an issue for any of them, we just went off on a tangent.

Phil...I'm not really sure why (it's 7:12 AM and I just woke up

Kobe...testing free agency; no more Shaq, aka he's the main attraction, more money

Shaq...He wanted Jackson to stay, no Jackson = him leaving.

Honestly, I bet Kobe will suffer from Scottie Pippen Syndrome.

Remember Scottie Pippen? Had some great seasons as the number 2 guy under Michael Jordan in Chicago, then went to Houston so he "could lead his own team" and was never heard from again? I won't be surprised if the same thing happens to Kobe.

Shaq is a guy you don't left go. Ever. Yeah, he has zero finesse, but at 7'3" and 330lbs, he doesn't NEED any finesse. There were a couple games in the series (Game four in particular) where the Lakers could've had a chance had Kobe done the smart thing (GET BALL TO BIG GUY IN MIDDLE) instead of trying to play superstar and taking bad shots left and right.

Kobe missing shots was funny..

I read the article in the paper on Saturday morning. I forgot why Phil was leaving. Shaq was leaving because he didn't feel like the team was like performing as a team anymore. The players were getting turned against eachother and they were rivaling over it. He said he didn't want to be a part of anything like that anymore. Kobe is most likely to stay with the Lakers because the Lakers are most likely the only team to pay him anything more than any other team in the NBA. We'll see what happends. The NBA draft is Thursday.

I'd just like to point out that my "$$$$$" reply was specifically in reply to Toxic's post (before mine), and not a comment on the initial post or the thread as a whole. sorry, should have made that clearer.

well...it seems, as of right now, only Payton is staying among the "Fab Four" or whatever Shaq, Kobe, Malone and Payton were called in LA. Kobe may stay if the Lakers hire Rudy but I dunno.

Anyways, with Shaq wanting out and about almost half the roster defecting, it seems this upcoming season is going to be ugly for the lakers but we'll see when preseason begins and who is on the lakers roster (and coaching them)

Karl Malone looks like he's ready to retire. I don't think he has that much left in him anymore. If anything, he'll probably play one more season, and then call it quits.

Malone wanted to win a championship, and if he thinks that the Lakers won't get him one anymore, he'll probably retire.
The only other reason he would stay in is to break the points score record, but that's a few seasons away for him.

Now on to the Lakers downspiral. I heard that Shaq was almost traded to the Dallas Mavericks for Steve Nash and Nowitzki that's crazy though. They're their best players so I just think it's a rumor. I think if Kobe leaves the Lakers he might go to an east coast team and try to be like Michael Jordan or something . Well that's what people say but you never know where he's going or if he's staying. I heard Shaq might not end up being traded because he gets paid around 24 mil a year with the Lakers. I don't know if any team is willing to pay that much or if they have that much to fit him in their salary cap or whatever.

As I said above, Shaq is a player you don't let go (If you're the Lakers), or do whatever it takes to get him on your team (If you're not). Don't have cap room? Make it. Have stars to trade? Trade them. That and he sounds as if he's still hungry for more championships, which always makes him dangerous.

As for Kobe, I'm telling you, Scottie Pippen Part II. Mark my words.

No, not with Kobe.

Pippen was good, but not Kobe good. He won't do as well, winning percentage wise, but he will still be an allstar.

Shaq = evil, injured, getting old player. His lower body is getting hurt from the upper body because he's huge. Nobody wants an injured player. He wants 30 mil for 2 years if he's signed on any other team. In order to get Shaq you have to trade star players. I was reading another article for it if he signed with the Kings they'd have to trade Peja, Miller, and Christie. That's a big wad of the roster and the star players. I wonder which team will actually do so. He might join with either Miami, Indiana, or Dallas. I haven't heard anything about Kobe yet. Probably not until the contract expires July 1st.

He wants 15 million a year? I didn't hear about that. Also, not only 15 million, but they'd have to trade several players... that's insane. He's not that good anymore.
