... Hmm, maybe it'd be nice for that page to show the name of the pages the people are viewing instead of their address ?

Like the name of the forum, or of the thread (or even both if it's in a thread, show forum name as well)...

It's not all that useful or anything, but it'd be nice, I think...

It was discussed somewhere else at one time, although the thread was either before the flush or disappeared...

The addresses are kidna nostalagic and nifty. Not to mention easier to store, hence that no, it's not going to be changed. Woo.

Nostalic ? O_o
Weird, but okay...

Although I don't think everyone knows threads ID by heart... That's why that'd be cool, I think.
But it's not up to me.

It would be lame. What is the point of going to online.php and see stuff like "Reading private message" or "Replying to X thread"?
Hopefully, it won't change.

How so is it better to see an address instead ?
Is it cooler to see "/index.php" rather than "Board index" or something ?

Meh.

You know what would be even cooler? If there was a check to see if a user was at a bad url like index.php?something=omgwtfbbq, since people frequently try to mess with crap.

And if a script finds them at this bad url, instant ban!

That'd weed out the dorks pretty quick, I think.

Hey, what's the harm in browsing 'online.php?I Like Cheese'? Even if it were something else, like if they were trying to find hidden/unknown URL parameters to do something stupid, it's nothing too big to worry about. I've done that myself looking for ways to enable/disable layouts and similar things on a per-thread basis. (I already had to find ?ppp=x in thread.php. )

Why not just display the URL and page name?

Yeah, I thought about that too...
But anyway, you'd have the address just putting your cursor on the link, so I wouldn't mind if the addresses weren't also displayed near the pages titles.
And maybe putting both the titles and the addresses would overcharge the page... We could keep it simple.
As I said, just putting your cursor over the link will give away the address.

um.. I remember a time in IRC where everyone was doing a bad url trick to make their username appear in yellow or gray or something. It did nothing, but it was all in good fun.
I don't see how a ban is necessary.

I think it's stupid how guests can't view online.php.

Well, I think the main reason visitors can't see it is because they don't want banned users looking at it. A banned user could just log out and then go look. They don't want that, and besides, who really cares where everyone is? If anyone does, it's not visitors.

No. Acmlm didn't want it to be that way. Someone allowed Erk to do that.
And what is so wrong about a banned user go to online.php? OMG HE WILL HAX THRU URLs.

I know. It's dumb. Either way it's not a big deal, but the fact that Acmlm said it.. I mean, look at title of this place.
I enjoy looking at online.php myself now and then.

That board has many classic elements, which need to be done by hand, like the Mark Forum Read feature; so /online.php is a classic and in the modern era it is simply nice to read something a "nostalgic" entry than a modern board which takes 'everything' funny from it.
That would be like a automatic spell checker which would disable lines like
'TEH HAXX0r IS BACK !!!!!11111ONEONEON'
And as for viewing /online.php in guest status; I don't care since I'm logged in anyway; except I'm at work

Stifu is only asking to be able to see what the threads people are looking at mean, rather than memorizing every id number. It's taking away the nostalgic feel of inconvenience?
If there was any point to your post, I didn't see it.

I'm not seeing a good arguement against this? The board will lose some classic feel? Give the users an option of which they'd like to use. Boom, that's the end of that.

No one blamed you for having an opinion, but only for having one that doesn't appear to be valid.

Also, your other point about phpBBs doesn't seem any more valid to me...
For one reason: it's not like we have to mimic what phpBBs do.
They just display "Writing post", heh ? Good for them, but Acmlm (or anyone else managing this board) could make it display something like "Writing post in [thread name]" instead...
