Here's another math puzzle (this one from Japan), which is popular with people sitting on trains staring at the four digits on their tickets. It's a good one, and the solutions are straightforward but devious. Here goes: Using any mathematical symbols you desire, get each of the following strings of numbers to equal 10. 1 1 1 1 = 10 2 2 2 2 = 10 3 3 3 3 = 10 4 4 4 4 = 10 5 5 5 5 = 10 6 6 6 6 = 10 7 7 7 7 = 10 8 8 8 8 = 10 9 9 9 9 = 10 You can't write any letters or numbers, but you can use any symbol (plus, minus, parentheses, factorial, etc.) you wish. You don't have to insert anything between digits, so, for example, 2 2 can be read as twenty-two. Each problem must be solved a different way, which means that if you should stumble onto a solution that works for all nine problems, use it as your bingo-style "free space" for the one that you can't otherwise get. Here's a solution to the first one: (1 1 - 1) x 1 = 10 |

(2 x 2 x 2) + 2 = 10 (3 / 3) + (3 x 3) = 10 (4 4 - 4) / 4 = 10 5 + 5 + 5 - 5= 10 That's all I could come up with for now. |

(66 - 6) divided by 6 = 10. (77 - 7) divided by 7 = 10. you can do this with all of them. (2x-x) divided by x = 10. It's a law of arithmetic! (edited by APH Striker on 06-19-04 11:03 PM) (edited by APH Striker on 06-20-04 12:49 PM) |

Neotransotaku and APH Striker, this is why I said: Each problem must be solved a different way, which means that if you should stumble onto a solution that works for all nine problems, use it as your bingo-style "free space" for the one that you can't otherwise get. Yes indeed, (11x - x) / x does indeed reduce to 10 since the Xs cancel. Points: I realized I neglected to create a point system, and I'm going to assign between 1 and 9 points depending on difficulty. 6, 8, 9, 4, 5, 3, 2, 1 are worth 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 respectively. I myself can't find a unique solution for 7, so that's worth 9 points. The freebie is worth 1. So JJ64 scores for 2, 3, and 5: total 9 DarkSlaya scores for 8: total 7 (and your solution is vastly simpler than mine, which was: (edited by Heian-794 on 06-24-04 12:44 PM) |

(11-1)*1=10 2*2*2+2=10 3*3+3/3=10 4*4-4-sqrt(4)=10 (5+5)*5/5=10 ceiling(ln(6*6+6)+6)=10 ceiling(ln(7)+7+7/7)=10 8+(8+8)/8=10 floor(ln(9)+9-9/9)=10 (edited by rubixcuber on 11-21-04 01:24 AM) |

Are those answers with natural logs exact, Rubixcuber? | |||

They are exact since I used ceiling and floor. Those are standard mathematical symbols. I'd have to think they are at least as valid as using the square root as a symbol. (edited by rubixcuber on 11-21-04 12:16 PM) |

hey i think i ve got other solns for the 6 s : (( 6! )/6 )/( 6+6) for the 9: (9to the power(9 - 9))+9... well for the seven.. ((7/7)7) - 7 (in other words 17-7=10...).. |
