Off: Realised there are many grammar mistakes in the poll's title and choices... If I could correct them, I would but... I can't so live with them.

Do you think that the creation of Lunar Magic was a good or bad thing?

NOTE TO ADMINS: No... it's not a stupid question so don't trash... well... as long as this doesn't turn into a flame war.

Well, I am neutral...

I think LM is what we needed because it is really good in seeing what you are doing. The GUI is also easy to use. It also edits the overworld the best. It is a pain to do it in the first place...

The bad thing... people think that "OMG! I AM TEH BEZT SUPA MAREO WOLD HACKZER! FEER MIE SKILZ!" And it doesn't help that these people like to use rips from SMAS. Sure Fu used it, but it was an example hack. You have some examples to look at to see what Lunar Magic (and a little ASM) can do. But of course it isn't Fu's fault for making the program... it was adding a link to here that caused these newbies to post crappy hacks...

I am not voting for this reason...

I vote for yes, but there's both good and bad about LM.

Good:
Easy to use editor, takes only a few minutes to learn
Make a hack fastter than with a HEX editor
Bad:
Easy to use editor, takes only a few minutes to learn
Make a hack fastter than with a HEX editor

Ok... Maybe I should describe that better...
Yes, it's good that LM exists, since it makes hacking easy, but if it's easy, then a lot of OMg!!1 i CNA MAKE MY OVN MAIRO GAEM! OMGOMGOMG!!!111!!12 n00bs will invade the commulity and post their LOLz!!1 i CHANGD DA FIRST KOPA ON LEVL 1 INTO RENZOR!! i ROX U SUX!!11 hacks, ruining the day for the other ones. Therefore, the experienced hackers's hacks will drown in the sea of "n00chs" (my own word for "n00b hacks") and all their work with tons of crazy go nuts awesome ASM hacks are just wasted...

I guess it depends on your perspective. If like me, you wouldn't be here without LM, you'll consider it a good thing.
If you think that LM brings too many newcomers here with too many poorly conceived hacks, you'll consider it a bad thing.

Seriously though, putting up with that sort of thing is a small price to pay to ensure a long lasting community for the game. I can think of dozens of excellent games, which people don't play anymore because the editing scene died. Because of Lunar Magic, that won't happen to SMW.

A good thing.
It's easy, fast and powerful.
What make SMW hacking bad are the LM users, not the program.

knuck, come on. You know... It's okay to use those ExGFX! I use them AND rip myself.

My perspective on SMAS rips... it's OKAY to do so. I do it and people I hand private demos to still like it... Why? LEVEL DESIGN.

I actually only use ExGFX workshop or Sonic GFX, and SMAS rips I have yet to do.

Although that's a great choice... yes, Lunar Magic is a good thing. It's just fun to be able to create your own version of Lunar Magic.

Really? You use Lunar Magic to make your own Lunar Magic?

Well, it is mainly the newbies' fault. They barely know how to use a computer, they find this editor, they see the link to the SMW Hacking thread... you know the rest...

Of course it's a good thing, especially forum wise.

If it wasn't for Lunar magic, Acmlm board wouldn't have been this big. Many members joined becuse of SMW hacking. (I sort of joined becuse of SMW hacking, and hacking of other Super mario games)

And there is nothing wrong making hacking easier.

Of course, there is more challange using a hex editor than a "Level editor"...

I, personally, view anything that allows easier creation of games/hacks to be a very good thing.

Sure, you have the n00bs who will make terrible hacks. But at the same time, there's the potential for people with great talents for level design and concepts who perhaps lack the programming knowledge to do such a thing themselves to realize their level designs thanks to a tool like LM. I can't see how this is possibly a bad thing.

My opionion on the Workshop: I'm not fond of it [the EXGFX in there gets very old very fast] and I'm not going to use it. I'm not going to inult the people who do use it [well, okay, the ones who just blantantly take them without giving their own] because I know it takes forever and a half to do that kind of ripping and re-eding to make everything nice and spiffy.

In short, I hate how often it's used but I don't really mind its existance. I'm not going to go out and insult the thing and/or the people who use it. I just don't like it.

And on the other two posts, they've got a point. Without LM, this place would've died. People who say that just because you would have to use a hex editor it'd make hacks better are WRONG. Not only would this kill off most hackers people who edit the game, it'd make hacks take forever to complete. I'm not sure you'd want to go back and have the SAME overworld, the SAME level placement, and a lot of oter stuff the same, eh?

Think about it. Who's going to keep a list of SMW levels in hex around? Seeing these new levels, who would really have enough time to re-expand the levels over and over each time they added a new one? I'm sure you'd love to be stuck with mabye 100 objects per level or so, eh?

With hex editing, continue to think about it: Who in their right mind would waste time making custom blocks? You'd be too busy trying to get everything right and such.

Think about it.

Many people complain that the creation of Lunar Magic is the cause for the lack of good SMW hacks.

Think of it this way, without Lunar Magic (or any other level editor), there'd hardly be any Super Mario World hack around, and just hex editing levels doesn't get you very far, so there wouldn't be very good hacks either

I've missed out on the whole Super Mario World hacking since the early versions of Lunar Magic, but I'd say it was a good thing ... blame the overused features like ExGFX all you want, it still allowed to completely change worlds, levels and graphics, and even add some of your own and expand the ROM, that's far more advanced than almost (or every?) other level editor out there ... not to mention, level editing on anything else than NES was (and still is) quite rare

Lunar Magic is a good thing duh... people work better in a WYSIWYG format You cant see where you are gonna place that overworld tile or what you are gonna change that palette to in plain old hex....

Even though Hex has its "unlimitedness" (sorta ) It doesnt have the quick and easy editing that you can see... that LM has. And its fun... who can argue with fun?

Bah. There's nothing wrong with the ExGFX workshop as a whole, it has (some) really great stuff, but most of what goes in there isn't terribly good, and is also fairly overused.

Anyway, where's the "other" option? It wasn't what the SMW hacking community needed, they did have one before it that was seemingly fair, after all. Sure, it helped a lot, but it probably would've gone alright without it. There probably weren't many people on it back then, though. As for the ExGFX feature, how is that overused? You can't overuse something that can be applied in almost infinite ways, it's the way you use it that's overused, and stuff.

Anyway, I'm going to agree with Kirby all the way. Hacking is *fun* dammit. I worked all night on a complete new castle tileset for my new hack and aside from the fact it at this point has no slopes it's great. I also worked a little on the intro. So "bah", I say. It neither killed it nor saved it (hard to save something that's not there, after all), and it sure as hell isn't a brand of shoes. Again, where's that "other" option?

Lunar Magic is the first (and still only?) Super Mario World level editor as far as I know ... I remember in September 2000, I think I was at Challenge Games and someone had figured out some of the level data, and then FuSoYa suddenly came and announced that Lunar Magic 1.0 was going to be released soon

Version 1.0 didn't have much else than level editing, but it allowed to make levels from scratch (add/remove objects) and expand the ROM to fit more, and could export/import graphics so we could change them, so it was already pretty good

Another editor...

It's funny, google rather showed that editor before Lunar magic if you search for "Super mario world editor".
