i was in at sam goody tonight, and then i saw a special edition of stone sour, with additonal songs like 4 or 5, and then i saw an ad in the store for seethers cd Disclaimer II. on the way home, i heard that shinedown is adding more tracks to their first cd...

what the hell is up with this lately? do they think that more people will buy it if it has a new song on it?

why cant they just make it an ep out of the new songs?
like seether is supposedly putting songs from their next cd onto this new one, why dont they just make an ep, because theres 8 new songs, that could be an ep!

and they could probably profit more from selling an ep than a version with more songs on it...

The music industry has finally figured out how to apply the DVD double-dip to albums.

Ha! I know EXACTLY what you mean there and it pisses me off. I hate how the dvd will come out...then weeks/months later they release ANOTHER and better one. ARG! I hate that shit so much. Why not release the good dvd BEFORE the shitty one? Well, I know the answer to that question but it still pisses me off.

I hate those too. I'd buy a CD and then months later, they rerelease the CD with new songs and new features that appear if you put the CD in the computer. And it's usually much more expensive. WTF?

this is their way to siphon more money out of us and become richer and richer. this is what happened with lord of the rings. They release the movie aired in theatres around june then in august, release a special edition of the movie that is just an extended version from the one aired in theatres...

Are you people lame?

This has been going on since the time music came out...They aren't screwing you out of your money if you don't buy them. Frankly, I purchase all of my CDs special edition to get the extra songs because I am a music fan and don't feel I am being fucked over. Besides, when you have to import everything...What's the difference between $35 and $40? I can only ever afford a single CD at a time.

It's the record companies that screw you over, not the bands. They make the decision to release the material.

You should be grateful that your favorite bands are recording more material. There are some bands who release singles without any real B-Sides. Now, that is ripping off their customers.
There are some great bands that aren't recording anymore because their record company screwed them over (a-la Powerman 5000).

And about EPs... Over here, EPs have been banned from the charts. Bands are limited to three tracks, meaning only two B-Sides.
This was so that pop bands don't have to write as much material, because, let's face it, the record companies pay someone else to write for them

It's an evil, biased market. It plays straight into the hands of corperate record companies, and honest artists are discriminated against.

As someone who semi works in the industy let me correct you....... With the advent of cheap(ish) recording equipment, PCs and many DIY'ers, many (with more following) bands now adays (and I'm talking real bands, not shitty pop-fuckers) are recording the songs themselves in their own homes, not bothering with a decent studio and then releasing the material through their own label/record company.

The record companys "screw you over" because they are losing money, fast, and want to keep fans, so they release new "special edition" shit to keep everyone saited and their wallets full.

Just to point out, mp3's have very little to do with the decline in the industies sales, its shit "popular" generic sounding music that is causing it. No one wants to buy it. Period.

Oniblade....
why cant they just make it an ep out of the new songs?
Because that costs too much in marketing and the record companies don't want to spend money, its cheaper to just re-release the album with a coupla extra tracks on.

To be fair, that used to be the case, but its becoming less and less now with my above argument.

The record companies are a dying breed, anyone can make an album on their computer if they have the know-how and a bit of spare cash. I could (and can) you could.

Just to set the record straight, I'm not defending the record companies because I've worked with them before and nearly always they are complete assholes who want nothing more than a fast dollar. I'm just correcting peoples misconception, theres no conspiricy and your favourite bands don't do it on purpose, they have no say about how their material is released.

Kellie: I believe it's very strongly the case. It's the sole reason why Busted are so popular *stabs voodoo doll*.

The record companies only want you to think they're losing money. In actual fact, what they're talking about is loss of money on singles.
This is true, but this can attributed to crappy pop acts releasing a single with one song and two re-mixes of the same song for

Heh, they always do stuff like this. I only gave in to it once though . I bought the J.Lo CD a second time because I really liked the song "Im Real". I should have just recorded it off the radio, I might have been satisfied with that but I was young..they just want money, money, money, money! It's sad for people like me who don't have that kind of money to spend on re-done crap.

I'd like to state that...

special/limited/deluxe editions of CDs are the shit, yo. Whether it be bonus tracks, a 2nd CD (preferred), a DVD, a digipak casing instead of jewel case, whatever...they kick ass.

By the way, Sam Goody (and any in-mall record store) is a lousy, lousy place to shop. Order online at bullmoose.com or something.

digi paks usually comeout along side the cds first release, as a special limited edition

and what makes digipaks so special?
the only thing ive noticed about them is they tear easily, and you cant fit them in a cd case holder

Lol, oh yeah. I remember buying a remix album too from J. Lo I had that song "Im Real" on like..3-4 different CD because it was on the Ja Rule CD..I forgot about that. Another thing I bought twice was Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP..but not because it had anything like special edition. Someone borrowed it and never gave it back but yeah..

If I would buy a "Special Edition" type thing then it better have some real extras. Not just 2 songs or something. I'm talking about an extra DVD, poster, 5 new songs and stuff . Either that stuff or it better be one of my favorite artists. It also depends on if I have any money at the time.

Sam Goody is lousy for everything. Don't ever go there. It sucks. Tower too!

I personally think that reissues can be a good thing.

Note that I said CAN be. For instance, I love the fact that Rhino Records rereleased all the Yes albums up to and including 90125 with all sorts of cool bonus material (Typically alternate/early versions of songs).

But then again, I spent $35 on the Ultradisc version of Rush's Signals, so I'm exactly the kind of consumer the record companies are targeting with these practices.

....

People actually buy CD's in Malls?

HAHAHAHAHA

You guys are stupid.

I usually only pay 3-5 bucks for my CDs. I go to the record store and look through the cheap, used, and free bins. I find all sorts of good quality music in there. I take them to the counter, look at the disk, play the first 30 seconds of each song on my CD player, and if they all work fine, i buy it.

Bam. Last time i did that, i bought 8 CDs that worked perfectly fine, for the same price as ONE of the CD's were at Fred Myers (Metallica - Saint Anger... Fred myers had it for 22 bucks... i paid $3.50 for it...)

So obviviously, when a CD is re-released, i don't sweat it. I just buy the "special edition" of it, if its worth the effort to search for.

I don't blame the Record Companies. I mean, they do try to make a cheap buck but can you blame them? ITS THEIR FUCKING JOB. Its not different that you trying to put in some overtime at work so you can buy that new videogame. Yeah, i don't agree with how they run their bussiness but i can't honestly say, i would run it any different if i was them.

Bands are the same way. Bands usually own their songs, everything is copyrighted to them. A record company can't release anything with out the bands permission unless the product is owned by the company (In the case of alot of popsongs... The singer doesn't own them). So if its not a popsinger or a popband, don't blame the record company, blame the band. There milking you also.

All surfaces printed on. You can have great art and design with digipaks. I have several digipaks and none of them have torn. I put my CDs on a shelf. Digipaks are far more interesting and appealing to me than jewel cases.

As much as I appreciate being laughed at and called "stupid", I feel I must take the time to correct you.

Contrary to what you believe, bands usually DO NOT own the rights to their music. This isn't true only with pop songs. Check a CD sometime if you don't believe me..it will almost always say "Copyright

Damn, we don't have anything like that in any record stores I've been to. They just throw CD's on the clearence rack and try to say they're on sale for cheap prices but they flip it on you sometimes and make you pay more.

I like music though and I'd probably take that over anything else..except food if I was really hungry.
