Originally posted by Tuvai Yes, but let's just say Acmlm's Board was poorly put together in the beginning. The thing that caused the posts table to grow so big were the post layouts. Since the beginning posts layouts were stored along with EVERY posts somebody made, with the purpose that old layouts were stored as soon as a user got a new one. It only recently got changed, as far as I know. After 3 years. Na.. but the postlayouts are still stored. maybe somwhere else, but they are still stored. |

But the way they're SUPPOSED to be stored is for example in the users table (where all other information such as user ID, email address, etcetera), that way it will only need to be stored once, instead of being stored sepparately along with every post made. |

No, no, I mean, they are still stored for every post. Edit yours, and see. |

Yup, I noticed; thought it already had been changed but I was wrong apperantly. I highly recommend to Acmlm to change that as soon as possible though, obviously it's not a good thing for the database to store something along with EVERY post, while it can be stored just once. ALL other boards out there do that, and there's a reason for it, an obvious one. |

I think it's like that in 1.8, my SQL files for posts are extremely long in length. But yeah, like everyone said, the files got erased, not hacked. |

Hopefully not, I usually have trouble restoring a backup of posts into MySQL. Usually blanks out. |

I've always liked the fact that the layouts are stored somewhere so that you can see all the old and crappy layouts people had back when they wre n00bs But of course, I would understand if they changed that. |

Why would someone want to hack the site? It would basically prove no purpose... |

It could have been a hacker that deleted the DB, but I kinda doubt it. Maybe a virus that got detected by the AV after hitting a few files. Personally though, I think it was a glitch. Maybe a server screwup, maybe something went wrong in the board's code, made the database start growing really friggin fast, and the server deleted it. All I know's it wasn't deliberate. (I emailed them about it, and they said they'd never heard of it happening.) I would like to know WTF happened though... (edited by HyperHacker on 03-16-04 01:22 PM) |

Well, this is what I'm currently suspecting: - PHPMyAdmin was restricted by IP, but one of the changes in the IP list apparently broke the restriction and everyone could get in (and of course, I didn't notice since it just let me in like it normally does) - For some weird reason, PHPMyAdmin could show up in search results in Yahoo, even though the URL for it was nowhere to be seen on any page - Maybe someone found it there, got in, and felt like deleting everything just because he could I know for sure it's not the admins at ZTNet who did it, because one of them emailed me and didn't know either how it happened (he's the one who restored the 4 month backup) ... Oh well, the restart made the board clean again and easier to upgrade, so there'll at least be some good coming from it As for the way post layouts were stored: - Beginning: everything is in one single field - 1.7: headers and signatures are in separate fields for posts, allowing them to be disabled - 1.9: post layouts are stored in a separate table, and only once (per layout) no matter how many times you use it, but this was only implemented for posts - 1.92: same, but now it also works in private messages and announcements A lot of the space in the old database was the post layouts from old versions of the board |

Imoto: There's a difference between a post which shows a lot of effort to convey an idea, and one that does not. There are good points Acmlm made in that post you didn't get, I guess | |||

There are good points Acmlm made in that post you didn't get, I guess I get the good points, but didn't feel to reply to them. I just stated that Text can use much space. If you copy it a tousend fold, everything small can grow big. It may be that someone played with adressbar of his or her browser to get into PHPAdmin. |

It isn't that his text is big, it's that yours is tiny Note: You may need IE or a browser that actually understands image headers to view that as a jpeg and not a text document (Right click: Save as tiny.jpg if you must) |
