Now I heard somewhere, that hockey isn't doing to well in the TV raitings and that this might lead to the end of hockey. Is this true?

I've been to a few games live, and I love it. And the arena was full as well. I mean, so much energy, how could you not like it. Of course, not all sports are fun to watch on TV. I mean, I love baseball, but I really can't sit for three or so hours at home just watching it, unless I'm cleaning or doing something else...

...anyway, just wondering, is hoceky really in that bad of a shape?

Even if nobody watched hockey on TV, the sport wouldn't come to an end! Think of the countless professional hockey games played before television was invented!

Hockey is much more fun when watched in person -- the icy air, the noise, the rasp of skates. I mean, all sports are more fun in person, but hockey has its own charms.

If you ask me, they should play all games outdoors like that old-timers' game they had in -- was it? -- Edmonton?

Outdoor hockey would be nice, but that's sorta impossible here. Even in the winter, I don't think the ice would be able to stay safe enough for people to skate on.

Now roller-hockey or street hockey, now that's a different story.

Yeah, being from South Florida, outdoor hockey at any time of year is going to be a challenge! (My brother lives in south Florida... I'm a cold-weather person and could never hack it there! Summers here in Japan are tough enough!)

Hockey doesn't exactly have a long history in the souther US, does it? Maybe the people who latched on to it when it was a fad will fade away, leaving only more serious fans. A few of those teams that moved down south might move back north again where old-time hockey fans are, and equilibirum will be restored.

Tennis went through something similar in the early 1990s -- Sports Illustrated even ran a cover story entitled "Is Tennis Dying?" But from what I hear, tennis is alive and well these days. Every sport has its popularity ups and downs. Look at how baseball recovered after the '94 strike. And when Ichiro went off to the Mariners in 2001, people predicted the imminent death of NPB (the Japanese major leagues), yet just two years later, the magical Hanshin Tigers' season of 2003 sent attendance, TV viewing, and merchandise sales through the roof!

it is give and take. the owners would like to make a profit and players would like to make a lot of money (or earn a salary that is worth their abilities or something like that).

as for hockey dying, i don't believe so. after the '94-'95 lockout (or work stoppage), the NHL expanded with 4 more teams I believe. So yeah, I think times are tough for both sides since the economy is down and such. but I don't think hockey is going to disappear. I believe we may see some teams fold unfortunately if certain teams stay in the red for too long.

*stops laughing*

Oh, sorry...

*continues laughing, finally stops*

Hockey will never die. Like ABC promotes it to begin with... it'll be on NBC starting next season. (I hope there IS a next season... stupid CBA...) NBC will do a better job with the NHL because they don't have many big-name sports to begin with.

I just started watching Hockey awhile ago. After watching Miracle . Well I haven't watched a home game yet. I hope they don't get rid of it. I don't think they would though

Bella: Which team would you watch?

The game may CHANGE, no question - but it'll never die. You don't just wipe a sport off the map.

It could gradually die professionally, but I'd think it would take a long time.

It won't DIE, but the National Hockey League, which to Americans is the equivilent of "Hockey", will be in big trouble if they don't play next season.

Only on the $5.

And even then Canada wouldn't be what it is today without the sport. Imagine life without Hockey Night in Canada...

Or all those commercials that are involved with hockey somehow. I remember one trying to advertise brighter lights for your vehicul by illuminating an outdoor rink for kids to play on.

I seem to see something involving hockey everyday, mostly novolty items given out in a case of beer.

Some uninformed hockey fans (like myself) might even argue that the Tampa Bay Lightning winning the Stanley Cup this season may signal a low point in American hockey.

Nah...it's just the lamentation of a bitter Flyers fan.

Hockey will never die. Hockey just isn't exactly a "hit" here in the States, just like Baseball isn't in Canada. It's not like inter-sports are gonna be popular everywhere, just where they were founded at. Hockey is to Canada as baseball/football is to America. See the connection?

However, there simply is no denying the state that the National Hockey League is in right now. It would be bad not only for the cities, but for the owners themselves. The merchandise, stadiums, etc would be a huge loss of profit. There's old timers that still want to play and finish up their careers playing in the NHL, and many young guns that want to improve. This year's NHL draft is perhaps one of the best in a while (Al Montoya will be this year's Marc-Andre Fleury, no question), but we may not get to see these new faces for a long time.

The current NHL off-season is worth looking at, too. There are reports that the Sens are close to a deal landing Hasek, who we haven't seen play in a long time. And the Free Agent market will be larger than ever before, as it appears that 2/3 of the market are slated to become unrestricted free agents.
