What's been the biggest surprise to you guys so far? Besides Sweden thrashing Bulgaria 5-0 within a year of losing to EGYPT, of all countries three to nil, I certainly didn't expect Greece at the top of their group after two rounds. |

Biggest surprise to me would have to be Greece, as well. I know they did good in the Qualification matches, but I never thought they'd do this good in the Group stage. Very impressive, indeed. Euro 2004, Day 5 (June 16th, 2004) 17:00 UT Greece 1-1 Spain Goals: Gre: Charisteas (66) Esp: Morientes (28) Yellow Cards: Katsouranis (7), Karagounis (27), Zagorakis (61), Vryzas (90+1) Esp: Marchena (16), Helguera (37) 19:45 UT Russia 0-2 Portugal Goals: Por: Maniche (7), Rui Costa (89) Yellow Cards: Rus: Smertin (16), Evseev (21), Alenichev (87) Por: Ricardo Carvalho (24), Deco (85) Red Cards: Ovchinnikov (45 handball) Greece gets one point against Spain, and is set for the Quarter Finals with only a draw against Russia. The Greeks, with their great defence, could be this year's surprise team, and question is, of course, how far will they go? Spain will have to go for a very difficult match against the Portugese to see who will follow the Greeks. Karagounis for Greece and Marchena for Spain miss the next match because of yellow cards. Portugal wins in a controversial match, with a much disputed red card. Russia becomes the first team to be knocked out, while Portugal still has hopes of Quarter Finals. They must beat Spain in their last game, however, and this might prove to be too much for the Portugese? Smertin's Euro 2004 championship is over, as he will not play the last game because of yellow cards. Group A:
Top Scorers: 2 Goals: Zidane (Fra), Larsson (Swe) 1 Goal: Karagounis (Gre), Basinas (Gre), Charisteas (Gre), Ronaldo (Por), Maniche (Por), Rui Costa (Por), Valer |

It has to be Greece, as they're all but in the QF's now. The odds of Russia beating them are very slim I'd think. Sweden's win was huge but Latvia almost produced that big shock the other day. |

I would if all the Swedes WEREN'T HAMMERING THE BBC'S WEBSITE SO I COULD LOOK AT THE HIGHLIGHTS BEFORE THE NEWS TONIGHT. Sounded like a BEAUTY though. Now go out there and tie Denmark 5-5 so that the Italians are shut out. |

Well... apparently one of the GAMES OF THE YEAR was on today in the form of Holland vs. the Czechs... and it wasn't on live. The only game (aside from when we get into the final 4 days of group matches with 2 games at the same time) we didn't get live... But from the highlights... oh geez. Can you say c-o-l-l-a-p-s-e? |

The referee for the Holland - Czech match was POOR. That's all I can say. He ignored a valid penalty appeal, yet gave a Dutch a red card when it was obvious the Czech was diving. I think Holland were the better team nonetheless.

Somebody should at least update the thread title while I'm away (I've been doing some voluntary work this weekend. Got to see Zlatan's goal on a TV with very bad reception). Colleen: Germany hammered the Latvians and the Dutch. Only bad luck has kept them from winning. They are completely capable of beating the Czech anyway, which if it happens will give them the QF. Besides, look who's talking, Mr. England-will-win-it-all. England should be lucky to even make it to the QF. They stunk agaisnt both France and Switzerland (They couldn't produce anything against France, and up until their first goal against the Swiss, they were like headless hens. After the goal, they weren't too good, either. Even though they manage to keep control of the match, they made some terrible plays. Croatia, on the other hand, played good against Switzerland, and were quite equal with the French (they should have won against France, had the ref. been able to see Trezeguet's handball). |

If Croatia beats England, then I'll eat my hat. Isn't gonna happen. I would not be surprised at all to see a Latvia win over Holland... |

Have you seen the way England plays? On TV they showed some examples of English attacks from the Swiss match which showed how England would start a counter-attack which could produce a great scoring chance, but because of terrible tactical calls by the English players, they ended up having to save themselves by playing the ball all the way - through nearly every player - back to James. Now, as for group A. Spain is OUT! Portugal wins the group (quite surprising from their opening match), Greece takes number two. |

Well, the solution for that's very simple - don't start James. But we'll see. Portugal was lucky to recover and take first place. Spain... well... they're Spain. Chokejob as usual. |

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiko Kooooooooooooooooooovac! 1-0 Croatia! Still 80 minutes to go, but, well, this will be interesting... Edit: A the fear of sounding repetitive, England keeps getting lucky. Their play doesn't impress me, they're quite good some times against Croatia, but for certain periods, they stink. 1-1 would be an ok half time result, 2-1 just ain't right. Croatia can still make a comeback, but, well, it'll be tough. If France wins their match against Switzerland (currently 1-1), we'll have a Quarter Final between two overhyped teams who have both failed to impress (England/Portugal)... England have played well. The first team has been the best out of Sven's lot. So far they have the most goals of the tournament, and Wayne Rooney has the golden boot. And France have won 3 - 1, so it'll be France Greece and England Portugal. Seems ok to me =S

Well, today was the first good game from England so far. They were horrid against France, and made too many mistakes against Switzerland. The goals they let in against Croatia shows that England still has many defensive problems, especially during set pieces. I actually supported England in this group at the beginning of the tournament, but their poor and boring performance against France made me want to see them gone. Now that they're playing Portugal, I don't know who to support, since they've both been great disappointments. Now, tomorrow. Italians accuse Danes and Swedes for "fixing" a 2-2. I doubt they'd do that, as one of the Danish players said, "it's just not something people with a Scandinavian mentality does" |

What did I tell you? England started slow today but once they got their rhythm... Oh man. Rooney is having a breakout tournament, and if he continues his good form against Portugal there will be problems. They really need Beckham to step it up though. He's been OK but... he can be better. Maybe bending in a trademark free kick might kickstart his campaign against Portugal. I think England will take Portugal but it's going to be a tough match. Portugal has the 12th, 13th and 14th men (the crowd, according to Scolari) and have an extra day of rest. On the other hand... it's England. No matter what happens, it's going to be entertaining. As for Greece/France... Hm. Depends what side shows up for Greece - the one that drew Spain, or the one that choked against Russia. At the moment, our live game tomorrow is Italy/Bulgaria, which HAS to be changed. I'm sorry, but Sweden/Denmark is definitely the more important game in that group. I'm actually predicting a 2-2 draw in that one. But it's going to be a COMPETITIVE draw, without any funny business. Should be a cracker. |
