I just read the new issue of Via (A Magazin from our Railways, SBB CFF FFS) and they featured an article about Amtrak and their buisnesstrain on the eastcoast, Washington - New York - Boston.

So, do you know this line? Or others you think deserved to be mentioned?
Or just some experiences with Trains or Public Transportation in general?

Or if you have any questions about Public Transportation in (to you) foreign countries, ask.

I use public transportian everyday. Cheap, safe and fast (my mother takes long time when I call her for taking me home )

Now I don't know about public transportian in US in general. All I know that US is an car loving county, and there is like on passenger in each car.

I wonder what happens with US when there is no oil left...

I would use public transportation if it was available where I live. I tried driving, and it's just too hard.

I take the train to work... It's not particularly high tech or fast, but we've just had a new high speed railway line down in the south east that takes Eurostar trains down to the Channel Tunnel. 186 mph makes it just as fast as fast as the French TGV, and most Shinkansen services Eat that

Public transit is the best option here in Chicago. Avoid traffic. I take the bus and train often. And since I live in a suburb, I take the Metra train into town whenever I need to go there. Much quicker and easier than the hell that is driving.

I'm bound to use the local trains and buses in Berlin. It takes me exactly fifty-two minutes in one direction (assumed, the train and bus arrive in time, since I need to change from to bus <-> S-Bahn ), other than else I'm only using the train when I'm going to Rostock with friends; nice city and for only 28 Euros you can travel Sunday OR Sunday the whole "Deutsche Bahn" net; you only must not use the ICE ... But you can take up to five people with one ticket; this is just a few bucks for everyone

My way to work is about 67minutes + 2 * 7 Minutes by foot. And only when the Train or the Bus is on time. (On Time = plus / Minus 1 Minute).

The SBB CFF FFS may not get the 28 Euro for up to 5 People. But with a 1/2-Tax (Halfprice abonement) you can travel on most of public transportation in switzerland for CHF 52.- (That includes Trains, Busses, Ships and Some Touristic transportation).

Valid on any given day.

Halden ain't exactly a big town, and since I live in the center, I walk wherever I need to go, except if I'm headed for my friends who live out in the "suburbs", then I'll go by bus.

I take the bus to go to the subway station (Metro) and from there it's a simple 10-minute ride downtown.

Our subway system is simple, it's not like some cities where you have 8-9 lines and they intersect 50 times.

Yep, although it's probably the most advanced TGV you'll ever see. It's about 18 carriages long, splits in the middle, and has all sorts of special design features that allow it to operate safely within the Channel Tunnel.
It's not technically a TGV in brand, but has inherited it's design and engineering from it. TGV is also a technology, that derives it's speed from the design of the train, the engineering, signalling and track.

hmmmm.... a few trains blew up in Madrid 'cause of terrorists....
*K-Pel watches train-goers cower in fear
hehe

Um, but no, there's no train station near me... I've been on trains, but the only train I've been to that actually took me somewhere was in D.C. I took the subway system... All the other trains I've been on were tourist type, or in an amusement park... or something else that doesn't mean anything :-P

I wish they had a rollercoaster that went as fast as that Eurostar thing goin' 186... fastest roller coaster I been on only went 100mph. I mean... safety... bah... if you just have hills in the track and no loops, I think you could have a perfectly safe rollercoaster that goes 186mph :-P not sure how many people would ride it, but I would. hehe.

But yeah... DC trains were nice...I just like being able to look at my surroundings and when I'm driving that's not really possible 'cause I need to make sure I don't kill someone by crashing :-P But there's no bus route within 6 miles of my house, and no trains even remotely close to my house :-P So I drive everywhere.

Canada used to have lots of communter trains...But for the size of our nation, it's hella easier to take smaller prop planes up north and use the highways.

Europe and Japan are very different geographically and therefore the ideas of Europeanizing the North American rail systems are just plain stupid

Although Via Rail is very nice for travelling out to BC. Takes about 4 days, but there are beds and stuff. Very nice.

There's no railway up here, so we're stuck with the purple First buses (they used to have these old yellow things that made this awful noise when they stopped... they got rid of those a while ago, though), and a few Munro's ones... They definitely don't go at 186mph, either Seems more like 26 most of the time.

What is public transport like in the US, anyway?

I don't often use public transport myself... But it doesn't mean I'm a stranger to it...

I live in the north of England, so the only time I use a train really is when I go down south to visit relatives... Though, when I'm down there I use the tube quite frequently (I normally go down on week-long visits, and we spend over half the time in London)... And travelling the tube has gotta be one of the best public-transport experiences ever, considering it's one of the busiest, if not, busiest train services in the world...

TGV? Then would the TGV Web be something for you.

A shame that Switzerland is too small for a highspeed line, but what we got here, is good.

Amtrak (the long distant train network) is godawful, but the city busses are pretty decent as are many urban subway/train systems. Some are crap. It depends on the city.

As for here in NSW... State Rail is in crisis, not enough drivers or money, lots of delays, it's all a mess. The busses in Sydney are smooth and efficient as far as I can tell, though. They'd better be. Once I move up there I'll be relying on them completely.
