So Hidden Mario and Proto_K got me thinking about this, and what I found was the way to access this "Import SNES Tile Map" window. Be forewarned: It's rather difficult to do, unless you have a good keyboard and long fingers. This should not be hidden so deviously. It's probably not at all worth the trouble.

How to do it: Open the 16x16 tile editor. Push Ctrl+Shift+Alt+F1+N+O+Insert.
Yes, all keys must be pressed. This is what "m16-7k" means ... Map16, 7 keys.

Some keyboards will not be able to register all of those keys pressed at the same time. So if it doesn't work for you, tough! Take it up with FuSoYa.

He didn't need to because that's what the code reveals.

Geh This makes my fingers hurt. You have to enter it fairly quickly, too, or else it fails.

And could someone give a more detailed explanation of the uses for this? This could be the undiscovered EE FuSo mentioned that is "fairly big" fairly big not in the sense most of us thought, though, probably. I can't seem to figure out what it does just from reading the text on it...

And you don't have to push all the buttons down at the same time, just press them down one at a time and keep holding the old ones pushed.
And I don't think any keyboards don't support that many buttons. I mean, the most buttons from the same 'area' you're holding down is three.

Sweet nectar of the gods! This could prove to be quite useful!

Now, uh...how in the world does this thing work? And what format are these ".set" and ".bin" files in?

I was aware the keyboard might be an issue, so I was careful on the choice of keys. I think most keyboards will be able to handle it, but if not, oh well... at least it's in there at all. Zero-G was quite against it, and I had a few misgivings of my own, but on the other hand...

As Sendy speculated in the other thread, this is the handy little dialog that was behind DWTLC's rapidly developed graphics. Just before creating this, Zero-G was working on world 3 (water world). Given how long the graphics were taking, I knew we were almost certainly going to run out of time before the set release date for the hack. I did have some early code for a bitmap-to-SNES tilemap program I had worked on at one point, but I knew there would not be enough time to fully develop it *and* do my parts for DWTLC.

So, I compromised.

At www.romhacking.com, you can find a little program called pic2snes. A few have run into it before, I'm sure. It lets you convert a 16 color 256x256 pcx image into an SNES tile map and graphics, removing duplicate tiles in the process. I realized it might just be enough for what we needed, and quickly put together an importing dialog into LM that would take the resulting files from the program as input, copy all 8x8 tiles referenced in the tilemap to tiles in the 8x8 editor (with optional filtering of where exactly to place each one along with repairing the tilemap and optionally applying a color remap and importing the palette itself), remove redundant 16x16 tiles from the source tile map, copy the tile map data into the Map16 data (optionally scanning for blank tiles to use) and paste the resulting 256x256 image directly into the BG editor.

Zero-G thanked me by asking why I had waited so long to make it.

Just be careful using it. If you aren't satisfied with what you get when you import something, you should just reload the ROM to dump the changes to the Map16 data (along with the rest).

That key combination is annoying enough that I decided to patch the executable to allow a simple Ctrl+Insert to open the window.

How in the hell did you manage that, unless you recompiled it or something...

I simply changed a string in a hex editor [we`ll say "Test" for example]...

"Test" to "eTst" resulted in an error... I thought it was a simple checksum, too Doing that should've kept it true... but... eh.

[shrugs] Most older keyboards [like mine] won't be able to handle 3 keys total much less THAT disaster

Edit: Holy shit, it worked. Wow. It wasn't even that hard. Just pushed them one at a time, managing to take forever for M+O+INS... oh well. It worked.

heh.

It's so complicated.
I and maybe some other don't know how to use it, so I ask: Fusoya can you give as a description on how to use it.

Thx

Get a family member to help out, then complain to FuSoYa to make a new EXE with better key combo.

By the way, what is the point of this tool?? I never really understood.

I used:

My left thumb to hit Alt
My left pinky finger to hit Ctrl and Shift at the same time
My left index finger to hit F1

My right thumb to hit "N"
My right index finger to hit "O"
My right pinky finger to hit Insert

I got it no problem. Now if only I knew how to work this thing.

I have a question about pic2snes.
When I load my .pcx file, the program says: Not a VGA 16 PCX file.
Can someone help me with that and how can I get a VGA 16 PCX file?
