I'm not should if there's enough demand for a tutorial on how to make these things...or if I'm by any stretch of the measure good enough yet to give such instruction. I can do that, but...there's some things that trip me up. Anyways!!

Celtic knots. Probably the greater majority of you folks have seen 'em. Some of you haven't, likely. This things are fun, and relaxing...and generally don't take too long. Certianly not on computer. I think the one of these that I'm about to show ya' guys took the longest consume 55 minutes of my time. Here's the twenty knots I've done so far...all since Saturday.

Hope ya' like.

I like the boxy designs to the other shapes of the knots, and it's cool how you stuck it onto your layout. Needs ome colour though.

I just use good ol' MS Paint for it, and save it as a black & white .png to save space. Computer progs draw straighter lines than I do, more quickly, and more accurately. Not to mention...I've got a stencil to work from.

Spiffy. Nifty. Blarhaegablooakonaan. Damn, ran out of sane words...

Now, let's hope you didn't steal them and claim that you were the one who drew them

I actually drew 'em. Takes a bit of time, but it's worth it.

From what I saw of that program...I'd call that cheating.

Well.. knot013 is kinda nifty.. I do believe they have a few too sharp corners though. Imagine doing them irl x.x

I learned to do these things IRL before using MS Paint. I was shown how to do the sharp corners.

Doing the knots...it's a bit faster on computer, with straighter lines.

Here, have five more.

I wouldn't really call this a talent. It's an acquired skill. You need a plot of evenely spaced dots that forms a perfect square, one that looks like this:

Your total grid size could be bigger or smaller. From there, you start drawing lines into place. You go diagonally, and in pairs, like this:

It is of little consequence where you start at; it'll look the same either way. Now...start doing this more, but here's the kicker: it *must* go "over-under." Meaning, it looks like a weaving. A strang that's over on one intersection must be below in the next one. Like this:

Keep that up 'till the grid is filled, like so:

Close off the open ends. Yeah...there's a bunch of those. It should look like this:

Then...fill-in all the areas with dots in them, or erase all the dots & such (I fill 'em in). After that...decide whether or not you'd like to round off the edges. Depending on the knot...one may look better rounded, or still squarish. Look of both:

After this, you can adorn it with any patterns on the "ribbons" themselves, colour, or whatever...something I'm not any good at.

Break lines. I'll start with horizontal/vertical breaks, since they can't make the kinds of snags diagonal breaks can. Take the same grid you had before...and throw breaks out there. I'll throw a bunch out there. And yes, I personally tend to keep things semtrical.

Start laying out lines as normal, though things change a bit when you hit a break line:

Not too difficult, eh? Corners aren't much different.

And areas enclosed on three sides....

Parrallel break lines create interesting effects. Not too difficlt to deal with:

Finish up the lines, with these points in mind....

And fill-in (or empty out). I decided to round this one.

Diagonal break lines. This can get more tricky, 'cuz there's an easy snag to run into...end of a ribbon:

Diagonal break lines are a bit more of a hassle, since heading off ends of a ribbon sneak up all over. Using parrallel break lines will get around that.

Those in the corner will become those extra-sharp angles. A ribbon moving into a cornered-off area from diagonal break lines goes back similar to hitting a horizontal or vertical break line...

...but to avoid reaching the end of a ribbon, parrallel lines must be drawn, 'till it the parrallel lines reach another point on the series of break lines that prevents an end of a ribbon to creep up. Knot # 5, above, is a bit more pronounced of an example of having to carry parrallel lines for awhile.

Heavier use of diagonal break lines usually looks better *not* rounded. This knot, finished:

Obviously...the empty spaces in the middle of a knot come from enclosements from break lines. I don't think that requires a demo, or combining the two types of break lines.

Thank you for the insight of how you do those patterns. Is it easy to stuff it up though? the pattern's I mean? "like when making the patterns you have many idea's but is it difficult to think of what you wanna do? and you may have an idea but then while making it,you make a mistake." Is it better to make a draft copy in a paper before making one?

I just use the "paste from" command for the dot matrix. As for making break line sets that leave ends of ribbons...I've sometimes found that out when I was working the knot. I havne't had to *completely* restart from such a mistake yet. *knocks on wood* This may sound a bit strange, but I learned this skill only a few weeks ago. So...there may be (and likely are) things I don't know about the trade.

And yeah...every time I've done a knot, I was hoping for one thing...didn't come out how I was hoping. I'm moving towards just plopping down the breaks and see what comes of it.

Maybe you could create a website distributing these patterns?,because I have seen some website with these celtic patterns for other people to use or admire their work.

Hahahaah! That tutorial is awesome. If I were more interested, I'd make my own.

Those things are really cool. I like the fact that they're such small filesizes too. The rest of us need to take a lesson XD

Now I think a round ring would be a next challenge. What I mean is a ring made of those patterns
