OK, this is striking me as a VERY weird bug/problem that I just started experiencing today.

Whenever I run a file-sharing application (like eMule or WinMX), the program will suddenly freeze up after a few minutes. In turn, Avant Browser and Thunderbird both lock up as well, and I need to wait a few minutes for the file-sharing program to close. After that, I manually kill my Internet connection and the other programs start responding again.

No idea what's causing this... spyware check's clean, virus check's clean, PC was just defragged today, doesn't seem like there's a memory leak... I'm stumped. Those are the only types of applications that are freezing up the system too.

have you restarted the OS from that moment until now? it could be that weird stuff happened while the computer was on and a simple reboot will fix the problem... if not then um...i'm not sure what you can do short of reinstalling the OS

Yeah, I needed to do two restarts actually. Thank heavens for a reset button although I really don't like quitting XP like that.

I'm not reinstalling the OS. If anyone's going to suggest that, don't post. It just started today and it only seems to be with those programs.

I actually had a problem very much like this a while back, with a very weird solution. My problem was with Trillian, and what I had to do was to download something in another program while opening Trillian. Without downloading something it just killed my connection, when downloading it worked fine.

Very weird, I know, but you might want to try it

That IS weird.

I also read a few minutes ago that people are apparently having file-sharing problems with ZoneAlarm 5.0 (which I just installed a few days ago) - can anyone confirm that or why?

isn't zonealarm a firewall program or something, if so...then maybe it has to do with a severe bug zonealarm has with filesharing now?

Zonealarm is a firewall, yes.
It doesn't necessarily have to be a bug though... have you checked what ports zonealarm is blocking?
You may have to manually open some ports in order for those programs to work.

ZA 4.5 didn't seem to have any problems running file-sharing software though. Very strange... If it keeps up, I'll downgrade to 4.5 and see if they still persist.

If not, I think I found the culprit.

The RIAA and other such organizations HATE file sharing. I wouldn't be surprised if ZA does it on purpose.
Or, maybe the program's just using too much bandwidth/CPU. WinMX jumped up to a steady 85% CPU out of nowhere the other day, I had to close it to do anything else.

I usually don't have too many problems with slowdowns when sharing.

Anyways, problem fixed - downgraded to ZA 4.5, everything seems to be working fine. It's strange though... God forbid someone's using those programs for legit purposes and runs into that problem.

I get the feeling that it is done on purpose.

I've been paying (one time cheap fee) to get my music and I download it from EasyMP3 and I have never ran into a problem. But before I started to pay, I would get freeze ups and the likes.

If it's done by purpose somebody will find out... and when people find out. Zone alarm will be not so popoular anymore.

I don't think it's on purpose... My guess is that ZA 5 decides to handle port blocking a little differently. Block something the wrong way, you choke up traffic or cause a loop, system/connection hangs.

Still, my 4.5 settings were imported directly into 5 which confuses me.
