Does anyone else think an auto-refresh feature for online.php would be cool? Set it to every X seconds (10, 30, etc), or keep it off.

Yeah, I think that would be a nice addition.

Or even cooler, get one of those bird-dipping things on top of F5.

I would guess the biggest argument against this would be server load...every 10 (Or even every 30) seconds for a new call for data would add up fast, I think.

I press F5 in online.php every 1 or 2 seconds and it doesn't seem to be killing the server.
You can always use Opera to auto refresh...

I think no, how hard is it to click refresh or hit F5 on the keyboard ??

I'd much rather you click refresh or hit F5 than to have my bandwidth wasted to no degree because you people stay camped on online.php with a refresh

I like how you say stupid things.

At the moment, with 17 users and 6 guests showing up, online.php is a whopping, whopping...

...17kbytes. More specifically, 17,452 bytes in all. So, in order for someone to even make a dent in your bandwidth (1MB), they would have to refresh that page 59 times. Now, I don't see that as much of a problem, especially since in the past you have mentioned that you were giving the board a LOT of bandwidth (or unlimited).

Please. Complain some more. I like it when you do. It gives my life purpose.

As for making something like that (to stay on topic), it could easily be done. It's just that Acmlm will never get to it

let's see.... 5 people on a 10 second refresh....

that's 30 reloads per minute.....

540k....

32 Megs per hour
777 Megs per day
23 Gig's per month

that's fucking stuipd

and a waste of my bandwidth

the entire board right now doesn't use anywhere close to that, which it would obviously if there were an average of 5 people w/ a 10 sec refresh on online users.....

Now, you're assuming that, for a whole month straight, which is 744 hours (44640 minutes) straight, there will always be 5 people on online.php refreshing every 10 seconds. Now if we remove minimal activity hours (Let's say 2 AM (Everyone getting off) - 2 PM(People getting home from school/work)), that's 12 hours removed.

17Kb * 30 = 510Kb (Thanks for skewing it)
510Kb * 60 = 30.6 Megs (Wow, that's a little less)
30600Kb * 12 = 367.2 Mb (With inactive hours removed)
367200Kb * 31 = 11.4 Gb (31-day month)

Now, I once again doubt that for 12 hours straight, there will be 5 people refreshing the page. Let's average it out to (for this board) 2 users refreshing every 10 seconds. That would be about 12 refreshes/min.

17 * 12 = 204Kb
204 * 60 = 12.24Mb
12240 * 12 = 146.88Mb
146880 * 31 = 4.6Gb

Now, I doubt it would be even THAT much. So I see no problem.

either way with your gross underestimate.......

that's 5 more gigs of bandwidth used.... for NO real reason....

the board only uses 12 gigs now.....

so it would increase useage by almost 50 %..... which is..... -dumb-

Options:

  1. Click Reload, or press F5.
  2. Use a bird-dipping thingy on the F5 key.
  3. Use Tabbrowser Extensions (Mozilla/Firefox only)
  4. Forget about it.

  6. Get an auto-refresher
  7. Use Opera, it has the auto-refresh built in
  8. Put online.php in an iframe and refresh the page it's in using the same technique used in the error messages

Added on some. =)

Yeah, there's no point to auto refresh it when you're gone (other than wasting bandwidth) ... and bandwidth does add up fast, even 1GB/month for online.php refreshing is a little silly

I refresh online.php sometimes, but never for long, although I guess spying on people all day long might be fun for a while
