SUBS!!! I'll say what my bro said: Changing the language of an anime/film is not right. It's because you're changing what it was originally meant to be like. Changing the meaning of art is not good. That and Japanese voice actors sound a lot cooler. By the way, you guys do know that Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust was originally made in English, right?

Not only do I perfer subs on anime I do too on live foreign-language films. It's kinda weird seeing some speech not fit the speaker's lips AT ALL.

Truth be told, the more I see of subbed, the more I like it. Most dubbed voices suck anyway.

I'm gonna go with dubs, the main reasons I like anime is: 1. the story, & 2. the animation. I really don't care about voices, reading subtitles can be distracting if you ask me. |

JaCory: Reading subtitles isn't distracting unless you're a really slow or poor reader. I will always take subs over dubs. I would rather read an Engrish sub than listen to a Inu Yasha dub (Fortunatley, none of the eps I have are Engrish subs ) |

"WE LOVE THE SUUUUBSSS!" They're truer to the anime; I just saw a subed Trigun and a dubbed one of the same ebisode... The subs was like, 20x better. The voices just seemed so... fitting. Meryl and Milly have high voices, unlike their American voice overs... (edited by drjayphd on 05-11-04 02:58 AM) (edited by drjayphd on 05-11-04 03:05 AM) |

The only time I like the dubs is if that's the only way I can watch the show or if I'm too lazy to read. If not, then I like the subs. Usually the original voices fit them better than on a dubbed version. I too watched a few of the same episodes of Trigun dubbed and then I watched it subbed. The subbed was better than the dubbed one.

It doesn't matter. Really it doesn't. Although I prefer dubs (mostly because I'm lazy, and don't want to read), I will watch the subs if it's really called for (and belive me, sometimes it is called for).

As has been said, subs and dubs are equally as good sometimes. That's why I prefer to first watch the series (episode, whatever I have...) subbed, then watch it dubbed to compare. Some dubs, like Evangelion, are spot f'in on. Others, which I won't mention here, suck the proverbial big one. The latter kind, I just turn off the dub as quickly as possible.... |

I like the dubs on FLCL. Other than that, I prefer to either watch them without subs or dubs or put on the subtitles if I watch it for the second or third time until I understand what's going on.

I'm going to say subs, because after watching tons of bad dubs, the japanese subbed version is how it really is supposed to look. It's how it was meant to be. The only good dub I've come across is the one of Cowboy Bebop.

When I first watched Cowboy Bebop, I watched it subbed. Then a few weeks later they brought it back on Cartoon Network. I almost vomited. |

The anime dubs I saw in the US made me want to cry... On the picture the guy is screaming, but the person doing the voice is talking normally, etc... IT'S HORRIBLE. Besides, subs are cool, cause you get to hear japanese <3 Yep, thanks to subs I get to learn how to say "love," "die," "please," "hello," "good bye" and much more! I feel so cool. |

Interesting observation: The only time I have really liked dubs was in FLCL. The always off U.S. dubbing just makes the series seem that much wackier. At least that's the way I saw it. Sure, people like Trunxy can say all they want about "runing the original idea", and while that may be true, given the content of FLCL, I thought it just made sense. |

I don't have a fixed preference... DBz I saw dubbed first, and that was fine. Love Hina I saw subbed first, and that was okay (although later I found a version with better subtitles, that made more sense in some places)... but then later I saw Love Hina dubbed... and it just sounded so wrong; the voices were totally different, and of course the names were pronounced differently too (which sucked because I'd been using the names to learn how to pronounce Japanese, lol). So, basically I seem to prefer whichever one I see a particular show in first... I can live with subtitles easily enough, since I'm a fast reader, and of course I don't mind hearing it in my own language, as long as the voices aren't too bad. |

Originally posted by Xeogred No, it isn't complete ignorance, you won't see anime the way it was meant to be if you only watch dubs, besides, since you are actually WATCHING it you have lots of time to read the subs. Dubs make at least me look away from the screen sometimes. Originally posted by JaCory The point being that the dubs kill the story and that means you can't truly care about the story if you watch an edited, moronized, kiddy version of whatever anime you're watching. I watch subs, everything is subbed in Sweden, except stuff for kids. There's even some Swedish shows that have subs and to be honest it IS kinda handy even when you understand what they're saying. You get a chance to read the stuff you (for example) didn't hear. |
