I use Adobe Photoshop 6.0 for everything I do. There's other programs too, like Paint Shop Pro, and GIMP. Just a tip though, all you need to do to make a good avatar usually is crop a picture, they shouldn't look all that fancy and have all these effects you add, leave that for your sigs.

Photoshop 7 for me, even though I'm a stooge at it, it still gets the job done with me behind the wheel, or keyboard / monitor in this case.

Paint Shop Pro 4 for simple tasks, Photoshop 6 for more advanced stuff ... I've been that way for a few years now

And sometimes I'll use my scanner to get handdrawn stuff ... like for my current picture that I made almost 3 years ago

I use a cracked version of Paint Shop Pro 7. It's a nice interface, and easy to work with.

I used to use a cracked version of PSP7, but now i use Paint Shop Pro 8 they're basically the same.. Oh well. It's a pretty good program, easy to use, although everyone says Photoshop is much better (it probably is).

I'm using Paint Shop Pro 7 and Animation Shop Pro 3 since I like creating animated sprites
I don't like the auto resize feature for avatars; rather implement a warning that denies the usage of bigger avatars from pixel size. Maybe increasing the mas amount of pixels (not just limit the width to 60 pixels) to, let's say 80 x 80 or even 100 x 100 pixels, that would be good, although this would not affect me, since I don't notice any difference from my avatar: It is 63 x 63, but the three missing lines are just the transparent colours -> no real image loss at all

any program that can output a JPG/PNG/MNG/JNG/GIF image (with MNG/JNG not having any support to speak of in most common browsers, and certainly not IE), and a program that can draw/take images for you, is a suitable rig for creating avatars. usually they're the same program.

I use PhotoImpact 7 for most of my image work (with MS Paint for sprite/pixel work). my current avatar was simply cropped from a nice piece of Kuja fanart I found online, and saved out as a .jpg, uploaded to some webspace I have, and voila.

JNG? I never heard of that one ... what is it?
And I didn't know Photoshop 8 was out either ...

But seeing how long it already took for PNG to finally replace GIF (and not even completely), it'll probably take a few more years before we start to see MNG and JNG everywhere

(edited)
Searched in Google ...
JNG is a lossy single-image member of the PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format family. It encapsulates a JPEG datastream in PNG-style chunks, along with an optional alpha channel and ancillary chunks that carry color-space information and comments. While JNG is primarily intended as a subformat of the MNG (Multiple-image Network Graphics) format, standalone JNG files are also possible.

So it's like PNG (supports transparency, greyscale, etc.) but with JPG compression in it? Something that'll eventually replace .jpg files? Nice ...

Yeah Ace, it's called Photoshop CS now (Creative Suite), all new adobe products are followed by "CS" instead of a number, pity really

JNG? Neat, I really like jpg since I can lower the quality with alot of steps instead of setting number of colors or bits. But is JNG widely supported? Can browsers handle it?

For most cool stuff I take a screenie with Prt Scr and paste it in PSP7. It's not that PSP7 is better.. it's just that I feel way more comfortable with its features.

I had to get a plugin just to view MNGs in firebird, and even then it's not 100% perfect. however, to support MNG requires support for JNG, so I ought to be able to view those too.

anyhow, JPEG is an adequate format (for *most* purposes), unlike GIF which was showing its age a long time ago and had all these patent troubles with it so it was much easier to get it kicked out the door.

I'd like to see MNG and JNG become even as widely supported as PNG is today, which with the notable exception of IE, is pretty damn good nowadays, and, hopefully, competent browsers will start to take some of IE's market share away, so we can start using these new technologies that IE can't won't catch up to.
