| ...the harshness of the world around me came back to metaphorically slap me back from my thoughts. The girl dissapeared from the front of my mind, wisping away to the side-corners of my cortex to resurface once I had a minute to myself. The warm memories giving way to shattered buildings. It's funny, really. One minute you're literally on top of the world. The next, you're hunting yourself down in the rank, dingy wastelands you helped create. Call it Karma. I saw a movement through the perpetual mist, and quickly turned to face it, my hand racing for my pocket. Nothing, just something I'd rather forget the mutation of. Not that which I was searching for. "That which I was searching for" was on a balcony above me loading his instrument of retribution. The silence of the world made hearing the "click" of the clip sliding in easy. Diving away, out of his line of fire, was also easy. Keeping my weapon loaded at all times, too, was easy. I hit the ground facing the location of the sound, whipped out the pistol, thumbed off the safety, and unleashed hell. I was greeted by thudding. Not of bullets hitting flesh, but a slab of footpath doubling as a shield. Remembering my foe's immesurable ingenuity, now that was the hard part. |
