...Or is the era of the legendary videogame cheat/easter egg/rumor dead? Remember when stories of Akuma first surfaced for Super Street Fighter II? People would rush arcades, pump in quarter after quarter just to see if the rumors were true. Then, the excitement of facing a opponent you've only heard rumors of...now THAT was exciting... Or what about all the mythos surrounding Banjo-Kazooie? That thing had so much mythology around Sharkfood Island and the Ice Key, it had be torqued up for months way back when... Ermac in MK1. Sonic and SSM. Sheng Long in Street Fighter 3. The Hidden Boss in Primal Rage. Luigi in SM64. They were all classics! What happened? Did they just phase out along with the 16-Bit age and creativity, or did my generation of gamers just grow up? (edited by Jarukoth on 05-22-04 05:12 PM) |

Hoaxes are fun to watch... especially when people take 3 years to of their lives to prove/disprove/stop people from searching. Then you get to laugh at them when they wasted all that time.

Well, if I remember correctly, a BUNCH of less-informed people were either hoaxing about Sonic and Tails being in Smash Bros. Melee or believe that they were... That wasn't too long ago, but it's hard to say if they're true rumors for games floating around a lot these days. Now though, video game hoaxes are probably more annoying than fun... |

I remember when I was about 8 when I heard of Sonic Extreme. All my life, I was searching for it to complete my collection, until 2 years ago when I found out that it was cancelled. Things like that give you hopes. It's fun, and not that bad at all. Now it's dead. With the internet in abundance, people can easily dispel rumors. It's not fun anymore. I want my rumors back. |

Not just rumors, but well hidden and hyped easter eggs, too. Like the aformentioned Akuma thing. What the hell happened?

I remember when I was playing The Legend of Zelda: A link to the past, I had told kids at school about a secret world behind a mountain, and they all thought it was real. I guess people just have a harder time believing in rumors now, and if they believe it for a second they can just check on the internet. Most of the time someone will have already proven if the rumor is true or not, so people don't really have to try and find out. There are still some rumors around, but alot less than before. And thee mother of all of them... Aeris in FFVII. To this day people still think you can revive her. I believe the original plan was that it was going to be possible, but they decided against it. That's why you get her ultimate move so late. And her weapon I think. But there were tons of rumors for FFVII. Anyone remember the Wooden Chocobo? Or the money card at the clock in Kalm? I tried out most of the rumors well aware that they weren't true. Just for fun I guess. :/ |

Haha, I forgot all about Pokemon. But that reminds me of something that happened here at this very board. Now I'm not a Pokemon game expert or anything so I can't remember the name of the game or pokemon. But there was this one game you could glitch to make it appear. At first, hardly ANYONE here at this board believed the person. But it turned out to be true after all. Anyone care to refresh my memory on what pokemon it was? |

I dunno about the glitch, but I for one scrambeled all over the damn place looking for a frigging Mew....which DID NOT EXIST IN THE GAME. God damn it. Me and TheKram got wind of this and scoured the place, only to find that select few people had it, given out by Nintentdo. |

That was Kitten Yiffer? Ah yes, for some reason I thought it wasn't Mew but now I remember correctly. Yeah, everyone said that he was full of shit but Ace uploaded the proof positive video. Rumor.......true! |

Well, at least some of those things CAN happen... somewhat... with a game enhancer. Yeah, the Mew thing WAS a glitch but luckily it hasn't seemed to affect worldwide Pokemon competition. |

Well, nowadays, no secret can get out of today's gamers' sights. And after a secret is found, it is posted everywhere. So the surprise element is really shot.

How the hell has nobody mentioned... The Triforce in Ocarina of Time? That was one of the biggies. That one was frickin' huge, even. O.o'' Some people even went out of their way to create well done (although easily proved false) hoax pictures and the like. |

The last real secret that I found on my own was waaaay back in the day, when I was like 6. I played Commander Keen, and in one of the temples, if you let the worms all crawl by your feet, a foot would appear, and take you to a secret place where there was another oracle. Other than that...there are the wimpy ones in RtCW, where you just happen to find a room full of ammo. |

Occasionally you'll find an easter egg to be true. Like the Kirby's Adventure easter egg... I didn't believe it at first, but it turned out to be true. And I actually fell for the Luigi in SM64 one, as hard as it was to believe... I spent SO long trying to do that... I don't like people spreading rumors for no reason though. It's mean. I would rather you tell a true secret, then if someone doesn't believe it, they lose out. |
