I don't blame you Americans, after all, Dance music isn't exactly common but I'll try and spell out the different types of Dance music so you don't have top call it "Electronica" all the time, which is a meaningless term....

Ok....

Trance - Often confused with Ambient House music, Trance can be both fast and/or slow paced. Commercial trance has vocals on it, usually a female, and ususally some model. Trance is characterised by the drums being somewhat muted, the bass is also a bit muted, and a lot is made of "Sphere sounds" that is, melodies that seem to fill the room. (Bloody hell this his hard to explain....)
Examples - Anything by Ian Van Dahl, Mario Picotto, Ferry Corsten.

Mashups - Playing one or more song over another creating a brand new song. This is often very crudely done, but some mashups can be pretty decent. They're often confused with Bootlegs, but that ARE different....
Example :- Tocas Miracle is a Trance Mashup between Fragma's "Toca Me" and "I need a miracle by some girl I can't remember"

Bootlegs - A collaboration of using the lyrics from one song (or songs) and the music from another. This is a favoriate type of mine
Examples - my all time fave Smells like Teen Booty by Soulwax. FInd it, and loads more at This site Althoutgh it seems a lot of the links are down. Bugger. Ah well ask me nicely....

Drum and Bass - Do you need me to explain this? Lots of drums, lots of bass, not much Melody.
Examples - Satisfaction by Benni Benassi.

(Happy Hardcore) - Take Trance music, ramp up the speed and you have Hardcore Rave music. Happy Hardcore is the same only with vocals and is seen as being more "Cheesy". I LOVE this type

If people want to know any more types, just ask....

Bootlegs are just illegal copies of albums or recordings of shows <.<

Not in dance terms apparently.

I always hear "Dance" used in Canada. Never "Electronic(a)". I mean... geez, talk about your outdated terms. Right up there with Japanimation.

I've heard "mash-up" in the same context as bootleg, so that's what I use.

Where i am from they call dance music (the fast beat one) "House". The local club i visit plays this and everyone calls it house.

I've not given an exhausitve account of all genres out there,

House - Dance music often played in clubs, it's mostly piano lead (but doesn't have to be), some house isn't melodic at all. There are many different types of house music, like Ambient House, Acid house and even Euphoric House.

Examples- Playing with Knives by Bizzarre inc is a classic example

Underground - An umbrella term for any tune which hasn't been released in the mainstream and is only played by clubs and exclusive DJ's. The mainstay of the underground club scene is the "White Label", usually a one off (could even be a Mashup and/or bootleg).

Examples - Parappa Vs De La Soul (White Label) - I want this soo baaad!

Remixes - A "Jiggling around" of a Track, transforming it into a complete, new track. Pretty much any track from any genre can be remixes into a track from any other genre.
Examples - Too may to mention, but one of my fave remixes would have to be Jason Nevins' mix of "It's like that" by Run DMC

Being a fan of dance music myself, I think this is a good source."Toca's Miracle" is one of my favorite dance songs of all time, along with the mashup of Fatboy Slim's "Praise You" and Daft Punk's "Around the World".

A friend put it on a mix CD he burned me for my birthday. He said he downloaded it off Napster (it was quite a while ago). I don't even know if I have it anymore.
