depends entirely on what you need

and wow

what a noobish term

"A big Server"

how about

Powerfull, Robust, Nice, Fast

those are all better than

"A Big Server, LoL one that Monster Trucks can't even run over LOLOLOL"

anyway.....

I seriously doubt your school has 1.5 TeraBytes of data, if they did, they would ALREADY have a file server.....

and why does your school even need a file server PERIOD... just share the files with Windows Networking

better yet, if they THINK they need a file server

tell them to give me a call.....

I'll drive out there and pimp out their school for $15 an hour including driving time one weekend / week.

Actually, no. Several Distributions of Linux support software RAID.

Well let's see. 375 students at 6GB each = 2.250 TB. Unless you have a ~$2800 budget for this, something's gonna need to change.

This thread has been the most amusing one I've read in ages XD
Everyone thinking that Randy is just some random noob that doesn't know what he wants or what he is talking about, and Randy always proving everyone wrong
The SCHOOL has told him to do this, the SCHOOL has money, the SCHOOL needs the space. If he himself wanted this much space I can see why everyone would be so surpised, but not when it's for a friggin SCHOOL.

The thing is I doubt most colleges use up that much space, Even 4 schools is hard to imagine using that much space. Like Erk said why cant you just use Windows networking.

that's fucking bullshit...

graphics design majors in college wouldn't need 6 GIGS of data...

additonally..... it will cost alot more than 3 grand if you employ any kind of file sharing system that's worthwhile and secure on that kind of a scale.....

I mean you don't awnt a fileserver that looses data, guess waht ? that automatically implies Raid 5 ....

which requires at minimum 3 harddrives last I checked......

and if you need 3 TERABYTES of data... .it will take more on the order of about 20 200 Gig Harddrives to accomplish storage array of 3 TERABYTES

Those drives are about 180 a piece..... which is 3600 for the storage drives alone....

good luck finding a cheap Serial ATA Raid 5 Controller that will support 20 drives....

or finding one at all,

a quick check on dell shows a soloution for about 10 Grand... which being a school you MIGHT get for 6 grand.....

and something I could maybe build for about 5 grand.....

moving right along....

your school really doesn't need that....

the person that convinced them they did... is stupid.....

they shoudl take that pissy little 3 grand they THINK they are gonna get a file sharing network with... and buy footballs or something with it instead....

This is true, but he's in a public school with computer-illiterate fucktards running the show. I REALLY want to know what the fuck you have that takes up that much space, Randy. Seriously.

Video editing would... . But seriously, school administrations are 95% of the time run by idiots who think the knowlege of a Start button is all they need.

Um, I don't know what kind of video editing requires that kind of damn space... Because 4 mins of raw video with raw audio is 2GB IIRC. If you have XViD compression (pretty much the best there is right now) you can have almost DVD-quality encodes that take up no more than 1.4GB (2 cd's) for the full movie!

Yeah, like hell I don't, I've never used Adobe Premier or VirtualDub before in my life, nor have I made an AMV or ever encoded a full DVD movie, and not only that, but I can't tell that the Inu Yasha episodes I have look great and 9 hours, 14 seconds worth of video - MORE than ANY video editor at a HIGH SCHOOL would EVER need, don't take up a gigabyte of space even.

That's probably why. Now, for $1200 you can get the 1TB hard drive mentioned earlier, so 2 of those, a 200GB and a 50GB will be just enough for all that (but you might want to just get 2 200GBs as well so there's space for staff and system files). It's still gonna cost quite a bit though, and that's not including the stuff you'll need to get it actually working. (Plus you'll need a rather fast server/LAN if you're going to be using huge files like that.)
