Does anyone know a place where I could buy a server and it would be mine? I am finding a server for my school and I am probably going to about 1500 gigs of space. Does anyone know where I could find one? I am looking now but need some help.

Thanks

Server for school?

I don't know if your school would do it, but mine just set up a dedicated server with Linux and runs their site from that.

Talk to HP, Dell, IBM, etc.
It won't come cheap, I can guarantee you that.
1.5TB (~1500GB) of storage space is going to be expensive, just because it'll involve multiple disks (the largest disk drive I know of is only 400GB, so you'd need at least 4 of them, and you'd probably want more in case of fKitten Yiffers).

But what the *heck* do you need 1.5TB of storage space for???
What are you planning on putting on there?

Our school is project based. We do not have books we have computers. We use them to make projects on. We use technology for our work. Our computers were ghosted so we cannot save on them. We have a server now but we need a new one. And we have a lot of students so yeah...

If you honestly need a 1500 GIG server for your school (god knows why) and you want a prebuilt, I have to suggest Dell because they'd provide your school with the best tech support for it if anything happens, and you'd get the best deal.

But getting one that's 1500 gigs, prebuilt, is going to be costly... of course, if the school's paying for it, it doesn't matter for shit. I'd offer to build it for them if I were you - An opteron 246-250 system running a decent Nix build w/x86-64 support, few big HD's in a stripe, and you're set to go.

246 - 250? That's overkill for what would basically be an overgrown fileserver. A 140 or 2 240's would be more than enough (and much cheaper; especially the motherboard if he went with the 140). I'd recommend RAID 0+1 or 5 though... 0+1 is nice and fast, and there's plenty of redundancy, but it'd be more expensive than RAID 5 (which only needs n+1 disks instead of 2n, although a hot/cold spare or 2 wouldn't be a bad idea).

Well, the school's paying for it anyway...

Is it JUST to store files? I mean, 1500GB worth of INTERNAL files seems like HUGE overkill for a school network. It sounds like it's supposed to be an external server as well.

indeed it is alot of space, considering its for a school...I saw a 1TB hard drive in Popular Science Magazine, you can get one for $1000 looks just like a normal computer tower, except no room for any cd drives or anything of the sort...

1500GB for student files? How many students are there? 50~100MB should be fine for most people (maybe use some compression too; install WinRAR or some such thing on all the computers and post tutorials). If the textbooks are all on the server, they should only take a few GB, not like every student needs a copy.

It is not textbooks files. Its reports and all that. Video's, pictures and tons and tons more. And we give every student 4 gigs.

Well do they really need that much? Even with videos, some good compression should take care of that. Or they could use a little thing called video tape. You could also give extra space to those who need it (students doing big video projects and such), I'm sure they don't all need 4GB.
And just how many students are we talking about, anyway?

4 fucking GIGS per studdent? That's what I call OVERKILL.

With the miracle of *GASP* XViD compression, videos can be much smaller in size and still look really nice. For example, the Inu Yasha 147-148 special, 49 minutes and 11 seconds in length, is 421MB.
Do students really need over 8 hours worth of video storage? I THINK NOT.
