Darwin decided to mess with stuff. I don't know how. But even after wipping the drive with DBAN, the drive is still messed up.

Here's the problem: Somehow Darwin did a low-level format on its own. The hard drive used to report 5,000 cylinders. Now, it is reported around 77,000. And Windows 2000/XP refuse to install on it, and Windows 98 just can't connect to the Internet due to the network card being to new for it. ._.

If at all possible, I'd like a low-level formatter without data loss. I know this is possible, as I can get to Windows XP's partition just fine in Win98 (though it's NTFS, luckily there are NTFS drivers for DOS ).

First of all, a low-level format means wiping EVERYTHING. Second, if it's reporting that many more cylinders, it sounds like the logic board's cooked. And finally, I've been trying to find NTFS drivers for DOS that don't cost insane amounts for years. No results.

I hope that it's under warranty. Might not, since it came with an entire computer.

I've got data backed up on Zip, so just give me a low-level formatter anyway. I'm not too sure if Windows 98 can be installed and fully usable if the logic board is fried. It might, though. I'm not too keen on how hard drives work.

NTFS drivers, free versions are read-only:

DOS: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/ntfsdos.shtml
Win9x: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/ntfswin98.shtml (Requires system files from NT/2k/XP. Doesn't reverse enginneer the file system, just use native Microsoft-made drivers on Win9x)

1) DBAN is not a drive fixer... it is a Drive Data DESTROYER...
2) go to seagates website.....

3) yeah

AKA useless, for anything I'd be using them for.

If the logic board's dead, the entire thing's useless. However, if you can find one of the EXACT same make and model with a physical disk problem, you can always take the board out of it.

I think you misunderstand the concept of a low-level format.

It writes all 0's to the drive.
That's all it does.

If the drive is reporting the wrong # of cylinders in the BIOS and it's set to auto-config, then the drive is as good as a paperweight as it is a hard drive.

I found one now specifically for my drive.

Tom: I don't care weather that's all it does or not. Some sites tell me it's the last-resort fix. And in my case, it is. I'm doing it anyway.

You don't need one that's drive-specific...

Yes, you can DL tools that you boot from a floppy into PC-DOS and do it, from the MFG's site...

But you can do it in DOS (not 2K/XP DOS, real DOS). Typing "format /?" at the command prompt will tell you how.

The built-in format command only low-level formats floppies.

Besides, doing it on my hard drive fixed the problem.

A hard disk might have a built-in low level format command (just give it a special command and it does it itself), but there's no need for it, since any generic one will do the same thing. Anyway, since you've solved the problem and appear to be arguing over trivial matters, I'll close this now.
