(Though if I heard correctly, "Spoony Bard" is actually a horrible insult in Japanese or something). Whoever told you this... told you wrong. |
Yes, except that Woosley had nothing whatsoever to do with the translation of FFIV. As I recall, it wasn't until FFVI (Or III, or whatever) that his reign of terror began in the US. My personal favorite mistranslated bit in FFIV is when the gang are in the Baron bar, and the person speaking implies that Anna and Edward are about to inbreed (Tellah, as you may know, is Anna's father, and Anna and Edward are lovers. The character says that Tellah's EDWARD'S father for some reason). Golbez's scolding of Kain, "You only have to watch this girl!" is kinda neat too...it makes it almost sounds like he's complaining, "Here I am, the evil overlord, day in and day out, doing all these mundane tasks...and all you have to do with watch this girl!" Or something like that.
How would you fare if given a novel, in which the end of the world happens, to translate but had severe space constraints and couldn't use words like "death" or "suicide (despite an attempt of such in it)"? Nintendo put the choke hold on Woolsey. Judging from what he had to work with, I thought he did pretty well. I thought Woolsey was the translator for FFIV. Who did the translation then? I'm too lazy to go find out for myself. |

Ted Woolsey did a fine job and gets far too much guff for the few errors he made. He did a much better job than, say, Michael Baskett on FFVII. |

Originally posted by beneficii I tragically forget the guy's name. I am one-hundred percent sure it was NOT Ted Woolsey, though, to the point that I'd bet any amount of money on it. |

I thought it WAS Woolsey. I have the original SNES game to the point of the final boss, but I'm too lazy to actually go and beat him at the moment. (I've beaten the final boss many times before.) It's just that the ending thing takes too long for me right now. Perhaps you have other access to the credits? | |||

Just to clarify, my quote up there is about FFVI; I can't remember who the FFIV translators were. IIRC, thre were several. |
