NEVER thought I'd post here.

Anyway, I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that in the Japanese version of FFVI has a lot of swearing. And in one scene, Celes' underwear falls off. I was like, bullshit, but no one else has been able to confirm or deny this. Of course I've only asked lke three people.
It's an old game.
Anyway, I was wondering, is it true?

No underwear falling off... however, there is cussing. At least based on the unofficial translations of the game I've played, there is. Kefka cusses more than anyone in those translations, though every one of the main characters seems to say a cuss word now and then, save your happy happy ones like Terra, Mog, Umaro, Cyan... ok, so not many except maybe Locke and Sabin (or Mash in the translation) cusses... as far as I remember...

What town was that in? I can't remember that. Or is that the town where you get turned into a moogle or whatnot?

The Japanese version has better spell names. "Cure", "Cura" and "Curaga" sounds better then "Cure" "Cure 2" and "Cure 3", the same thing with the elemental spells here
Since FF IX the spell names got reverted to the Japanese ones back, at least in the US and German version ^^
But I won't play FF VI just again (got through it dozens of times) for that scene, but when I want to play it again ... and not only proceeding to that scene if some person says "Fuck" or something else ... FF VIII already had more then enough of that speak (at least in the German version )

It all depends on how you translate Japanese cuss words, I believe. Those who make unofficial translations like to make a habit of translating them as words like 'fuck'. Although they're probably more like 'shit' at the most. 'Bastard' is probably used quite a bit; they like that word in their animes and suchlike. Basically, you look at the swearing in FFVII and FFVI's swearing is probably similar, maybe a tad stronger at times.

Generally, FFVI had a pretty accurate translation. They missed out on some subtle bits involving the coin Edgar and Sabin tossed (or something like that), and a few risque referances, but generally it's not too bad.

FFIV is the game that suffered the most from the translation. Mainly because not only did they miss out on some points in the actual translation, but they gave us a version of FFVI Easytype. Because us Westerners can't play hard games. >.>

Oh, and they skipped on the porno mag too. Hell, didn't they cut the entirity of the Developer's Room or whatever it's called?

Oh, and the translation of spells in Final Fantasy games has been messed up from the very beginning. >.< However, Gandalf, you're wrong, in FFVIII the spell names have Curaga and suchlike. Unless that's just the Pc version... But I doubt it.

We didn't get the Japanese FFIV Easytype. Their Easytype is a dumbed-down version of ours. Meaning, not only can we not play hard games, but apparently they can't either (!!!). They did cut out the Developer's Room, though.

Spell names are so... insignificant. If they want to give us names that are real words, good for them. Although... Some are kind of weird.

Meh... Limiting cussing doesn't do much of anything to me. It's not like leaving it in really enhances the mood or anything. It's only when they take out semi-important details (Kefka's grudge against Leo, for instance) that it bothers me.

Didn't they change it to Firaga etc. in FFVIII , would look pretty weird to draw "7 Fire 3".
One of the few things I do know that are changed in FFVI however are the names.. a lot of them, I even think that the all-time favorite Atma Weapon was Ultima/Ultimate Weapon in the japanese.

Well, I'm currently playing the German version of FF VIII and it also does have the original spell names, like Vita, Vitra and Vigra for the Cure spells; I just mentioned tha speak itself. "Scheisse" and such was used way too often in that game
At least FF VI has a nice translation; it was one of my first English RPGs ever, I didn't had major problems to understand the language (like in Chrono Trigger too), there were some very nice alternative jokes in it, too. FF VIII, IX and X had these original spell names too.

"Mr. Thou" w/ Cyan and Gau ... , just to mention the scene with Gau in The Veldt

Spoiler:
Yea, I noticed that. In FFVI's unofficial translation, they made it much more obvious that Edgar used a double headed coin. But in the American version, it is either very very subtle, or I can't notice at all that it is mentioned like that. Stupid cheating Edgar! That's right, he CHEATED his way bro outta the throne!!! Also, yes, I did notice Locke coming onto Celes more in the unofficial translations... weird for a guy who is still eternally recovering from his last lost love, no?

Anyway, um, Final Fantasy Tactics has a shit translation, you must admit. It may be the worst in the series. But out of the mainstream ones (I-XI), IV seemed to be missing a lot. And let's face it, Ted Woosley (that is his name, right?) can't translate very well.

Yes, except that Woosley had nothing whatsoever to do with the translation of FFIV. As I recall, it wasn't until FFVI (Or III, or whatever) that his reign of terror began in the US.

My personal favorite mistranslated bit in FFIV is when the gang are in the Baron bar, and the person speaking implies that Anna and Edward are about to inbreed (Tellah, as you may know, is Anna's father, and Anna and Edward are lovers. The character says that Tellah's EDWARD'S father for some reason).

Golbez's scolding of Kain, "You only have to watch this girl!" is kinda neat too...it makes it almost sounds like he's complaining, "Here I am, the evil overlord, day in and day out, doing all these mundane tasks...and all you have to do with watch this girl!" Or something like that.

Kefka...

Spoiler:
Edgar cheated Sabin out of the throne because he didn't want Sabin to have the responsibility. He felt Sabin would prefer not being a king... Right? That's what I thought, anyway. Haven't played for awhile...
Also, I think he was coming onto Celes because Celes reminded him of his lost love. Understandable.

If it wasn't for the translations of FFIV and the original Final Fantasy, we would never have such wonderful lines as...

'You spoony bard!!'

And...

'I shall knock you all down!!'

All in all I think "Atma" is a cool word/name, anyhow. It makes for an interesting amount of flexibility in fanfics, for one (ie: define what "Atma" is...).

And spoony's fun word, too. It's actually accepted as a part of the English language, but FFIV is the only place that I've ever seen it used.

Correct on the spoiler. If memory serves also,

Spoiler:
Didn't Sabin know the whole time that Edgar rigged it so he "won"?

And I love those quotes too. You'll note that Square actually left the Spoony Bard bit in the FF Chronicles release of FFIV (Though if I heard correctly, "Spoony Bard" is actually a horrible insult in Japanese or something).
