Your would still turn it to the right, regardless of which hand you are useing, if you are at the same position and un-screwing it, then you would be in the same situation, am I not correct? |

If you're in the same position, with the light bulb in front of you and the socket behind it, the socket would be turned to the right (equivalent to the bulb going to the left) to unscrew it. Which hand you're using is, as everyone else has mentioned, irrelevant. The point is whether or not you turn your body so that you face the socket instead of the light bulb. This will reverse the left-right direction. |

*rushes in* Well, I just finally managed to conquer my computer... the hard drive got wiped and nothing would work... but now it does What'd I miss? Oh.. If the socket has the opening towards you, i.e. if you're looking at the socket on a rotating plate on the ceiling, it'd have to be turned left (counterclockwise). If you're screwing the socket onto the bulb from the back, it turns right (clockwise). |

Whats funny is, this is probably one of those things we overanalyzed. He was probably just looking for left. Man, that would make some peopel feel stupid....

You would screw the socket to the right. The hand you use is irrelevant. Teddylot: Now, that we're gaining a consistent crowd, maybe we can get some decent competition with the next few questions. Question 88: There is a town in Northern Ontario where 5% of all the people living in the town have unlisted phone numbers. If you select 100 names at random from the town's phone directory, on average, how many of these people selected would have unlisted phone numbers? |

Zero. Since they're unlisted, they won't be in the phone book. Yay for good timing. |

Ya know, I could probably get real technical and talk about how some cities phone directories also contain other towns numbers and blah blah blah, but NSNick got the answer, so whats the point?

Would I be guilty of overanalysis if I poited out that some people have one listed number for general calls, and then another unlisted private number, and that consequently the answer should be [5*(N-1)], where N is the average number of telephone lines per subscriber? (Thus if there are 1.2 phones per subscriber, 20 of the 100 random people will have second phone lines, and one (5%) of those 20 will be unlisted.) Kario, such discussions are quite worthwhile as it gives us a chance to crack the "Screen of Valiant Effort" rather than the "Screen of Shame"! |

While the logical answer is 0, the real-world answer is probably 1 or 2. Some of the people in the phone book have had their numbers changed to unlisted since it was published. And, of course, you also have to allow for incompetence (some of the numbers published are supposed to be unlisted). ---Evil Peer (edited by Evil Peer on 09-16-04 03:34 AM) |

Teddylot: And very few people have been able to crack the sturdy barrier between the Screen of Points and the Screen of Shame! Announcer: Yeah, you actually have to give the right answer to crack it, and that's crazy hard. Screen of Points: NSNick -- 29 points Jagori -- 21 points Kirby ATW -- 11 points Emptyeye -- 8 points Kefka -- 6 points Felix -- 6 points LostAuzzie -- 3 Points wolfman2000 -- 3 points Grey -- 3 points SmallHacker -- 3 points JJ64 -- 2 points geeogree -- 1 point Ultimanium -- 1 point neotransotaku -- 1 point Screen of Shame: Jarukoth -- 0 points Edsgravy0 -- 0 points Xkeeper -- 0 points ETG -- 0 points kornfan -- 0 points Heian-794 -- 0 points Banzai_Bill -- 0 points Kario -- 0 points Screen of Valiant Effort: Apple -- 0 points Masako -- 0 points Evil Peer -- 0 points Screen of "Dude, I'd Wear a Paper Bag Over My Head if I Were You" ziratha -- -1 Points Teddylot: C'mon you sorries! Break that barrier and get your name recognized!!! Question 89: Clem and Joe work in a coal mine. At the end of the day, Clem and Joe come out of the mine and bid each other farewell for the night. Clem's face is dirty and Joe's face is clean. As Clem and Joe set out for home, Joe wipes his face and Clem doesn't bother. Since both men appreciate cleanliness, why doesn't Clem clean his face? Announcer: Hmm, I wonder how many guys will find loophole answers for this one. |

because whatever joe wiped his face with was probably covered in dirt and stuff after working in a coal mine all day? Clem wouldn't bother wiping his face because it wouldn't make his face any cleaner. (edited by DarkFenix on 09-16-04 04:23 PM) |

They went different directions to go home though, they couldnt have used the same thing. My only guess is that Clem is not a person, he is a mining tool or Clem is the rag itself.

Could the face be the face of a watch? (I don't even know if you call the front of a watch a face. ) Anyway, if Joe's "watch" face is clean, then Clem would already know what time it is because he leaves the same time as Joe. edit: I don't know Kario, it says "both men" in the question. Who knows though? (edited by Reshaper256 on 09-16-04 05:03 PM) |

Well, both men appreciate cleanliness, and evidently Joe values the cleanliness of his face, whereas Clem values the cleanliness of his rag.

Now I am thinking its the watch thing, but so my answer is more specific. Does Joe wear his watch on his wrist and Clem has his in his pocket.

Originally posted by Kario Hmmm... Maybe it's the other way around - Joe has a pocket watch, and that's why its face is clean after a day of working in the coal mine. Clem's watch-face is dirty because it's on his wrist. edit: If Joe takes his watch out to check the time, his hands will probably get it dirty, so he would clean it. Clem on the other hand might not bother cleaning his watch because it's on his arm, so it would just get it dirty again. (edited by Reshaper256 on 09-16-04 06:32 PM) |

Joe sees Clem's dirty face and thinks "whoa, my face must be dirty too!" and wipes his face. Clem sees Joe's clean face and thinks "whoa, my face must be clean too! I don't need to wipe it!" Of course, the wiping happens after they've parted ways, so Clem doesn't see Joe wiping his face. |
