Just wanted to create a poll about the new server..... which *cough* someone I *cough* know runs.....

If you'd like to show your support for Acmlm's forum, please use

http://www.fiftypounds.com

For your future or current webhosting needs.

It's the customers who subsidise the server, and allow me to in turn, host Acmlm's board for free.

Our cheapest plan is $5 a month for 500 Megs of harddrive space. and 15 Gigs of bandwidth.

Don't let these providers who go OMG Unlimited bandwidth and OMG 98734783 Gigs of bandwidth fool you. They only offer it to you, cause they KNOW you won't use it, and most people think "More is better".

Acmlm had Unlimited Bandwidth on Overclocked.org

but I don't think any of us could maintain that Overclocked.org is a better host than Fiftypounds.com... now could we ??

As a proud customer, I wholehearedly support Fiftypounds.

There's some good tech support too, I dunno how many times Erk's bailed me out of a seemingly impossible situation.

the poll is biased... obviously... since it's your own damned server. lol. But in my opinion, it's a smidge faster. let's see if it's a stable server, though ;-) that's where the real test is.

perhaps a weeee bit faster, but not much. But Erk is cool on IRC, so I voted the first choice.

any of you that voted for not seeing a speed difference

are most likely on Dialup

so you wouldn't notice

if you bother to look at the very bottom of the page every now and then though

you'd see plainly.....

that.... the page generation times are usually under 1 second.....

the average page gen time on Overclocked was probably about 2+ seconds....

Average here would be about .... .4 seconds

I see much lower render times and faster loading, but it probably helps that the board started fresh and that the server isn't hosting nearly as many sites ... the previous board was also really fast at the start, but we'll see how it goes later ... seems pretty good so far, though

well most likely OC.org kept throwing more and more stuff on their free servers....

my board has 140,000 posts and the load times on all pages are slightly above this.....

but I'm doing alot more SQL on most of my pages too... so it makes sense.....

Seems to be slightly faster, but the less cluttered, new database probably helps a lot as well.

Page rendered in 3.331 seconds

Compared to about 2 seconds on the old board for thread.php.

Ingenious.

lol yes X... we all know how much you love me....

I'm sure you didn't probably make that number up.....

and of course ... in certain situations certain pages may take... a little longer to run than others.....

but on the whole.... nobody can dispute the fact... that on the average.... the page generation times are -signifigantly- faster than they were before...

The simple fact that a regular board member, and someone Acmlm knows very well, is hosting the board makes a huge difference. The more personal interest a webmaster holds in a hosted site, the more likely it is to remain in good running order. Can you say any of that about OverClocked, whose main site hasn't even been touched since November 2001? And what good is a 4-month-old backup going to do? Emulation World simply has too much content and too little personal interest behind the scenes...the whole network's a disaster waiting to happen, as last week proved.

This move was LONG overdue. I can see things running smoothly for a long time to come.

this server is a lot of faster than the other one...i zoom using the internet connection at work--i don't remember it even went that fast when I was at work but yeah, it goes pretty fast. In addition, I don't think this host will give us Zero-Sized Replies huh?

i guess, it took something drastic to get some change...just like a lot of other things in this world

Well, you know how I like the host already. I'm hosted there too, pretty cool to be hosted at the same place Acmlm is. It's pretty fast and stable, nothing wrong so far, just hope it can handle this board the way it was before, which I'm sure it can man. BTW, a friend told me there is no such thing as "unlimited" bandwith or something like that.

Keep up the good work with the server.

My speed doesn't mean much, broadband and everything... but it's nice to know that any problems with the running of the board will be dealt with quicker and easier.
