I'm talking about the old transformers here, the ones that came out in the 1980's. Chris just got the entire series of the old transformers and he said that they were anime, or at least a form of. I disagree here. I mean, I know it was based a bit off of a toy line in Japan and that they had their own version as well (I believe) but I still can't see it as an anime.

The original American version is not anime, but is based on it. Some of the later ones that came over here are American manufactured anime(anime made in America by anime makers from Japan.) like Armada. However, it's not really anime, at least I don't see it that way.

I'd have to go with what Trunxy said on this one.

But one question for you, what about Robotech? I've always wondered about that one but never did any real in-depth research.

Robotech is different because although the story is changed, the animation is the exact same as macross/southern cross/mospeada. Transformers was made after some dudes stumbled across the Japanese version. Also, in Transformers, almost all the characters are robots. Due to this, anime themes can't really apply as well to a plot change with robots than with humans.

the newer series are cartoons produced in japan

therefore, Newer Transformers=anime.

And the first was probably based off of the various mecha series of the early 80s in japan. But its not anime. Season 4+ are anime, If i remeber correctly. Like Headmasters, Targetmasters, and all those guys.

That's the long and short of it right there. It really doesn't matter wether you call it anime or cartoons when it comes to this series. It's good any way you slice it.

Transformers: Energon is. Armada was created in America by anime producers. The first transformers was based on the Japanese version of the same name(I believe), Optimus's name being Convoy. The various spinoffs(Beast Wars) were also first made in Japan as anime.

I see it as an anime seeing how animation is involved.
