I heard there is a way to convert without any data loss, is it possible? if so how and are there any risks of losing everything and having to re install windows and everything again? edit: im on windows XP Home (edited by Chaosflare on 05-09-04 10:25 AM) |

K well I read this at NTFS.com A: Standard Windows utility that is called CONVERT serves this purpose Just go to the Command Prompt and execute the command: C:\> CONVERT C: /fs:ntfs Where C: is a name of the drive you want to convert. After machine re-boot conversion process will start and you'll have your FAT32 converted to NTFS without of data loss. but that is for XP Pro, anyone know if it will work for home edition? edit: yes it will work, just read the help file for windows, but anyone know if there is any risks or anything? cause I dont have the install disc or anything for windows so.. if there is a chance I dont really wanna do it. It will probably work on XP home. Just try it. But remember, you can't change back when you done that. Unless your using 3rd party tools. And yes there is a chanche that something goes wrong, but it's very small chanche. Unless there happens a power outage or something it's safe. (edited by Kitten Yiffer on 05-09-04 10:33 AM) |

Well I guess il try it, hopefully ill be back after it is done, or else, ill see you when I can get my hands on a window's install disc. edit: K well I got the volume label, now it asks this : "cannot convert, because volume is in use by another process. convert can continue if volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID would you like to force a dismount to this volume (y/n) that doesnt sound to friendly to me.... Try creating a boot disk if there's an option to do so and booting from that. The NTFS site says it should work for any drive, and the example it gives is converting the C: drive...

Xkeeper you don't have to make a boot disk... . *shakes head* if you try for instance to do a chkdsk on a drive in use with NT it will say drive in use do you want to schedule on reboot ?? it will do the same thing for convert.... instead of asking us what the hell it will do Chaos.... just type the goddamn command and see what it says |

I DID, it said "cannot convert, because volume is in use by another process. convert can continue if volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID would you like to force a dismount to this volume (y/n)" I dont even know what all opened handles to this volume would then be invalid means! and I dont want to do it if something is gonna fuck my computer up. |

Get the Windoze install CD, put it in, reboot, go to the recovery console (like DOS for NTFS) and do it there.

Windows XP will reboot in a special mode (similar to DOS, although it's just the NT kernel without most drivers). It then would convert the drive to NTFS without problems except for one. Converting FAT to NTFS results in a drive that's not as effecient as a clean format. You still have all the features and bells and whistles, though. Partition Commander 8 would convert any FAT to NTFS outside of DOS/Windows. Supposedly, it is more effecient than the Microsoft utility. As I have never used PC8 to convert FAT -> NTFS, I don't really know. |

I highly advise against using any 3rd party partitioning tools.... use Fdisk and only Fdisk... unless you like to gamble with your data, and just hope you don't nerf your partition table and loose everything..... |
