you're best bet as much as I hate to admit it would probably be Dell for that price range

unfortunately, there are only celerons at that price at dell. I have a P4 2.8GHz, 512MB of RAM, 40GB HD, CD-R/W with DVD-ROM support and 15in Screen for $900 from a different company. The same dell equivalent was $1200

Or instead if a Dell, if you know how you could build your own. But buy everything first.

Finding a good cheap laptop is a major pain in the bum. For $900 you can probably get one good enough for now, but outdated very quickly and difficult or impossible to upgrade.

I've seen mockups of older model computers being converted to laptops. You will need a portable powersource ( a car battery will serve). Then you use a suitcase. In one side you put the monitor. And the other you would put the hard drive. I would advice that you duct tape both to the suitcase to make it a little more stable so it won't fall out. You want to protect your investment after all. If you go to a thrift shop I'm sure you can find a computer for cheap. I saw the mockup of the homeade portable computer on a tv commercial and unfortunately didn't get a screen capture of it. But I don't think it should be too hard to make.
