| A result of some god-given fortune, Callean's great shield was in superb position to intercept the dagger. The powerful magic that saturated the metal fought off the immense heat of the demon's weapon, and Callean stepped backwards to avoid a counterattack. As soon as he focused on the new enemy, the paladin understood its origin and purpose. "Unholy beast," he shouted zealously, "You will die this day!" Callean raised his sword skyward, and it was set alight with divine tongues of flame. |

Seeing no other option, Callean struck again, aiming at the beast's heart but predicting that the attack would likely just be deflected harmlessly. |

| Of course, Callean had no oppurtunity to defend against three simultaneous attacks. The paladin's shield did well enough to negate the frontal blow, but an attack from each of his sides sent him to the ground in a convulsing heap. As Callean lay several feet from his demonic opponent, discouraging thoughts ran through his mind. 'You are defeated,' his brain told him. 'Surrender now or die.' But no, the paladin did not surrender. He lifted his empty hands to the heavens (for his sword and shield were laying useless at his sides), and called out to his god. The knight's hands burst into vibrant rainbows of sparkling color. The fell back towards the ground, landing upon the fallen warrior's chest. Energy coursed through him. Callean stood.
