I'm pretty sure that most SMW hacks are never completed. Which, of course, is a huge shame, because merely by its being incomplete, people are a lot less likely to play it. I'd probably finish every complete hack available before I got bored and tried the incomplete ones, even if the abandoned hack would've been the best thing ever.

Point being, if you've lost interest in your hack, don't just leave it to rot. Make a final level or something, and release it as complete. If you do it well, no one will ever know the better. And people will play it and enjoy it. Ideally, you'd create your last world early on, so that you could just attach it to wherever you gave up and call it quits.

Things like Robomb's Quest being incomplete... that's a real tragedy, because they were so close. And it'd only take a little work to finish up. If you're not interested in completing your hack, that's okay... but you really should make a little effort to be able to present it publically.

Yea. x_X Just my thoughts.

[Edit]

I'm not trying to tell people what to do, just say that it would be in the hacker's best interest, if he's losing his hacking drive, to use the last of his energies to just conclude things. It makes for a much more presentable hack, and it doesn't require much effort. Granted, if you really don't care what happens to your work, then, by all means... don't complete your damn hack.

Obviously it isn't.

Ok ok.. I don't think final levels or anything should be forced, or they won't have the same quality as the other levels, and it'll be a letdown.. this applies to a lot of other situations also (THE MATRIX LOL)

wtf
i mean WTF
You wanna us to finish our hacks? If we quit a hack it is because we don't give a damn about it anymore. If we released final levels, good. If not, deal with it.
My hack is 2 years old and i don't feel like making a final level for it. Mostly because no one cares.
And hey, like YD said, the final level would suck if we were forced to make one.

I'm not saying anyone has to, just that it would be a good, efficient idea with a low marginal rate of expenditure / payoff. In the end, of course, it's the choice of the designer, but it's really a good choice, if he wants people to play his hack..

And the Matrix wasn't forced. It just sucked regardless.

I must say, this doesn't sound like you thought this through very seriously XD

You sound like a mother who is fed up with her kids because they don't want to eat the rest of their food. But you want them to at least finish chewing what they were eating, regardless of the fact that it could be a piece of meat fat or simply taste terrible, but you find it very necessary for them to digest it anyway. This will make the kids mad and they will hate you for life and they will go on Jerry Springer and blame their emotional problems on you. All because you're fed up with their lack of finishing their food.

You're taking it the wrong way. It's just a suggestion, although I gave I made it sound too imperative. It's like if I said "Use ExGFX in your damn hacks" or "Use a custom OW in your damn hacks"... sure, you don't have to, but you're gonna end up with a bad product without it. I mean, if you've completely given up and don't care, fine. But I doubt this is usually the case, so I think it's a good idea to use the last of your energy to just make an ending.

Actually, it could be quite the contrary. This has been discussed once in this forum... I can't remember who all posted it, but I know Kyouji was in the convo. If you have several ideas for your hack, then it may be ideal to implement most to all of your ideas in your last world. Therefore, you can make the others more simple... yea... but you need to be GOOD to do that. If you aren't good, then you probably can't get away with it

I'm starting to lose interest in SMW hacking too (just at the moment), The main reason for this is because I can't make certain things in my hack because Lunar Magic still can't change some of the important things. An editor isn't complete if only most of it's done. Another reason is that it takes to long to make custom Gfx, and Music editing isn't yet availible. Anyway, I'll probally take some time off from making my hack for a little while, but I'll come back to it for sure in a little bit.

Here's the latest version of it so far.
http://home.comcast.net/~atma-x/SuperMarioWorldUltima.htm
(a much faster site than Freewebs!)

Also, I've been taking a lot of interest in 3D Game Making right now, I plan to make a 3D-looking (2D platform style) Mario Game some time. It'll look much better than all those other homebrew 3D games too. The 3D Game Maker I'm using is the most Profesionally desinged one that I've ever seen. It allows you to make 3D Objects using up to 1000 sides, so the Objects will be really smooth, instead of being all blocky like in other 3D games that I've seen (it even allows you to bend the objects in several ways, this comes in really handy for making bent Pipes like in Mario 3, and DW: TLC). The Objects will also use more than one texture, as this Editor alows you do that. It also has hundreds of other features that I've never even seen in another 3D Game Making Program, and many options that I've never even heard about before.

The program is called "Cosmos" and it's made by "Radish Works". This one is definatly not a waste of time like 3D Game Studio and others like it.

And there's a really good tutorial to go along with it.

With the amount of unfinished hacks out there, Im suprised nobody has tried to get permission to pull all the levels together to actually complete a hack.... wait, no Im not.

But the thing is, if you arent going to finish a hack, don't publisize a demo. Hust like hhallahh said, tack on a few levels and change the OW a bit and call it a day. Just make sure its good.... please....

In your own defense, it probably took you forever to insert your own custom made graphics. (or at the very least make the graphics, period)

It takes too long to insert custom gfx, and also having to set up the 16x16 tiles on top of that. It's easy, but a long process. And that's why I haven't had a lot of time to complete a lot of my levels, as far as the layout goes.

Atma, I think the problem with your hack is you used too many tiles per tileset.

I mean if I'm feeling like splashing out I'll have 20-30 unique blocks for making the scenery for a particular tileset, but you have like 100 or so per tileset. It looks beautiful but I think it's too extravagent and too difficult to manage within the context of SMW, which wasn't meant to handle that amount of tiles. I mean I think detail is important (if not essential), but... well... how you took the time to set up all those blocks amazes me!

How is your hack going?

Where may I find this "crappy hack" of yours?

Oh, btw, hack Kirby's Adventure or Kirby's Dream Land if you're bored, like I'm doing
