This would be pretty complex to implement, but.. Have a registration test. Some sort of simple questions, maybe based on the FAQ or something. Example: Say a user posted a horrid hack screenshot. TERRIBLE. Which of the following would be the best to do? a. Flame the person b. Tell an admin to close the thread c. Give the person hints to make it better. d. Lie and say it looks good. (Correct anwser: c) And I also thought of a ranking system, for instance, if there were 10 questions: 10 - 9 correct: Full posting priviliges 8 - 7 correct: Given a warning after registereing to look out, or something. 6 - 5 correct: Some sort of "trial membership", say, a 30 day trial to see if you're really a good user less that 5 correct: Not allowed to register 0 correct: IP Ban? |

And switch up the answers a bit, maybe even change the order of the questions. I like. |

I'm against it, it's useless. What I would adore, is a e-mail validation via user. So this feature is used in common boards like phpBB since a longer time, it makes itself a good feature to prevent some idiots and people from abusing or trolling around here. well I Don't really see what good e-mail verification would do on this board.... so the person registers, confirms his e-mail, and then spams.... and the quiz is pretty much overkill. I like someone's idea of checking that only one IP is allowed per member... but of course, that'd mean AOL users would prolly be restricted to all using like one account :-P .... which isn't -really- a bad thing ;-) j/k Overall, I think Ace's board is pretty good on lamer-control.

Errr ... iirc, the most dial-up users have dynamic IPs, such as me; I'm using an ISDN flatrate and except for the begining my IP changes every seesion, while DSL users have a fixed IP address

What it does is it only allows one address to register, so if they try to re-register with that address, it won't work. |

An e-mail validation at registration would also be the basis for a retrieve-password-via-mail system; so if you forgot your password, you simply clicked on "Forgotten password ?", entered your user name, then the board could send the passwort to the current e-mail adress set in the profile It's a safer way than asking an admin to put a new password in (edited by Gandalf The Grey on 03-15-04 06:19 PM) |

Problem is passwords are irreversibly encrypted, and if it generated a new one, people could abuse it. Just put in a lost password request for someone and their password's changed. |
