Allright; here's the skinny.. I've been messing with wine with APPLICATIONS and been utterly dissapointed.. Well today while looking through some old CDRs i found a ripped copy of Warcraft 3. Well I decided Id try to get it working in Wine before throwing it out. Welll.. FIRST try.. and it runs.. Not only that.. it runs FAST. even with a big bloated desktop like GNOME with mozilla and stuff running I can play it fine!! http://www.deviantart.com/view/7023884/ note: please dont turn this into a "why not just boot over to windows" or "windows can run it natively" stuff.. I'm just happy for the first time in my life something worked without trouble. (edited by Error on 05-04-04 06:35 AM) (edited by Error on 05-04-04 06:36 AM) (edited by Error on 05-04-04 06:42 AM) |

What I find odd is that IE6 SP1 runs faster on Linux via WINE than WinXP The huge compatibilty with WINE is one advantage to it... After it could run Windows Calculator, I couldn't resist Linux! (j/k ) You should submit your success and how you did it (if any workarounds were required) to the Wine Application Database... I'd rather not read the rather long thread currently there. I've got one sumission in there, Metapad 3.5. I feel so happy. Even though it barely matters. |

Actually nope. Not a single work around was even remotely needed. I installed per the usual. and applied the no cd crack.. and then played.. Works amazingly well.. |

I just did install Fedora core 2 test 3. Worked with no problems and it was pretty automatic. The only thing it didn't find was the ethernet card, installing it manually was very easy. Especially since I did know what it had for name in Windows. I test Wine as soon the up2date is finished on that computer. And test some old Windows games... |

"I'm just happy for the first time in my life something worked without trouble." The typical Linux response when something actually does go right. Congrats on finding that 1-5%! |

you don't get my point...you can't compare program across platforms UNLESS both platforms are under the same conditions...which isn't the case... one more thing, what is the specs of the computer you are running on? if you aren't using p4, then of course there is disparity as well |

"I had a FUCK load of time this past week trying to get windows to use my onboard sound; scanner; etc.. Im still having MAJOR problems with it.." I've got the solution to your problem. Use hardware made after the 80's and you'll be fine. And if saying "Don't assume it only makes an ASS out of U" doesn't make you an ass yourself (because really, what kind of people say that? ) then certainly using Wine with Windows does. a-kthnx "Keep in mind Legion that it is diffrent from distro to distro. You've been promoted to Colonel, Colonel Obvious. But not when it comes to trying to emulate Windows programs. |

Error: Therefore Windows doesn't have drivers for it in the OS (it probably will come SP2, surprising SP1 didnt have them but maybe the codec changed). That's why I told you to go to the mobo mfg's website but you didn't bother listening... If you use REAL drivers (like the ones from nvidia.com) instead of Windows drivers for gfx cards, mobo chipsets, sound cards, etc, you'll notice a huge speed increase. |

I thought everything "just worked" with Windows? i never had to do this crap in linux.. the ONLY distro not to have set up my sound easily was Gentoo because you compile the kernel yourself. |

Originally posted by Error so what you are saying is windows 95 will recognize my USB mouse... so yeah, you thought wrong. everything works with windows if the item in question came before the particular OS was released... windows will try its best to match drivers for hardward produced after it was released but generic drivers do not always work well |

Your answer is assnine as the original XP Home install (which came from Compaq) worked.. XP Pro just doesn't seem to be able to pull it's weight. (edited by Error on 05-05-04 08:34 PM) |

I'm wondering if XP Home on the Compaq *COUGH* came with the proper drivers installed as well, and possibly SP1 as well, whereas you couldn't put SP1 on your pirated copy of Pro and that was the issue? If you think its XP Pro's fault because you didn't know enough to install a driver, you just prove a point that some people aren't willing to learn shit to switch from what they are using now to anything different. You didn't want to learn how to go to "www.msicomputer.com" or "www.hp.com" and search for, download, and install the driver. What makes you think that the average PC user will want to learn to open a terminal, type in a command, recompile their kernel, pray to Linus Torvalds, and then hope it might work? |

Originally posted by Error XP Pro doesn't pull it's weight? XP Pro does wonders for me...especially for my P4 laptop, which can now use hyperthreading because I have pro. In addition, i don't need to reboot when I install drivers, a majority of the hardware I have on my desktop computer is automatically recognized. Win98SE doesn't even come close to what XP provides. One more thing about XP Pro is memory management...it actually has some unlike its home counterpart. but whatever, if you are turned of to windows, then don't go back and join the microsoftsucks.com page |
