I can say this much (and I don't mean it to keep you from doing it) Hacking anything via hex in SMB1 is not really fun. Sometimes you can get awesome results, sometimes you will get very BAD results.

It depends what part you wanted to edit. You want to edit just the title letters, you want to edit the starting animation, you want to edit... wtf do you want to edit on it? Whole thing?

Text editors can change limited bits of text, such as the copyright ntendo thing, and the 1 player and 2 player choices, but if you want to do anything serious, you ahev to edit the hex. I suggest not trying that if you don't know what you are doing.. Or at least back up the rom first if you haven't already.

The data for the title screen is in the graphics itself. That sounds weird, I know. Ever notice the bottom of the tiles pattern table, the garbled/scrambled tiles? That's the title screen data. It has some RLE in it, so becareful trying to edit it.

When using FCEU-d from DragonEyeStudios.net, you can view the tiles with the PPU viewer. Scroll the mouse over the tiles and you'll see hex values. Figure out how a set of tiles are put together from left to right writing down the hex values and you should be able to find where it's located. Since the tiles look a lot the same (might be hard to tell), you might change the title graphics to letters or something you easily tell the difference between. This will make writing the values easier. The main advantage of this is, you can modify the tiles and have a completely different looking title screen. *Note* This is a general technique I've used for quite a few games that works. It should work theoritically. I've done this with Faxanadu and that is step by step how I did it (the second time). If I'm wrong about SMB1, then this should work on some other games. |
