Cars are only a convenience. As it stands they're too expensive - insurance, gas, repairs, the initial investment, depreciation, it all adds up to a lot. Everyone here (america) seems to think they need their own car for some reason.

That last comment piqued my curiosity, but I couldn't find the number of cars per capita here in America. If anyone could find that, it'd be interesting to hear. Especially compared to other nations.

I don't know the exact number, but I know it's supposed to be a huge number compared to the rest of the world. I can't tell if that makes us look real good or real bad, though... |

Originally posted by JarukothWell, no shit! Let's look at why: -America is a developed nation with a moderatley high average income, therefore people can afford to have cars. Because most of America is rural and public transportation in most places is poor to nonexistant, people need cars to get anywhere. -European nations (which are developed and not struggling) have public transportation that can be used effectively for travelling throughout Europe (trains, subways, cabs, busses, etc). Europe is densely populated and covered with railroad track. Therefore, Europeans don't need cars. -Third world nations which are rural like America have poor roads and poor citizens. This combination makes cars almost nonexistant in areas like South Africa, Pakistan, China, etc. (China is a third world country in that citizens work for so little money and cannot afford anything, the nation's industries are underdeveloped, and the government and public officials are extremely corrupt). So, Americans not only need cars, but can afford them (not many people who live and work in Manhattan drive cars). Europeans can afford them but, due to public transportation being readily available and expensive gas to promote using it, they don't need or even want them. Third world citizens would rather have a real house (as opposed to a shack made of sticks), indoor plumbing, some form of health care and immunizations, and other things we take for granted, before they would want a car. |

I've been trying to get myself a car for a while now. But my credit blows so much, (lack of and what I have it's good anyway) so I'm having my boss co-sign with me, since he's got great credit. Hopefully by sometime next week, I'll have a brand new one. My current car is a 1990 Grand Am SE, blue, four doors. The compressior for the a/c is shot, the two front windows do not roll down, the motor monts are lose, and that's not even the half of it. |

Originally posted by AnyaSo in other words, since you live in Florida, and you have no A/C nor do your windows go down, you're driving an oven. Youch. At least my power windows work, except I can't open (or close?) the RR from the center console - I think the switch needs cleaning. But my A/C does need a recharge... I need to have it leak tested so I don't have to have it filled again either. I remember the A/C in my car used to get cold enough to see your breath, 10 years or so ago, when it was the family car and we took it to Lancaster in the 90 |

I want a car. My dad's probably gonna get me one in the summer, but then I need to get it home, which is an expensive cross-Canada trip. Haven't got a real license yet (just one that I can drive if there's another driver in the car, in my case, completely useless ), I won't be able to until June. Still, I'll need something to drive... Actually, I just remembered, I do have something. Anya, wanna trade? It's a nice big monster truck, fully electric, in perfect condition. It's just missing the insides, 10 inches tall, and controlled by a remote. (edited by HyperHacker on 04-30-04 12:12 PM) |

My old car was almost exactly like yours, Anya 89 Subaru XT. Piece of frickin' junk. Except, in my case, the windows rolled down, just not up. I had to grab the window, hold it up, and wedge a rock in the window sill to keep it up. The transmission finally broke on it. Fortunately that didn't happen far from home, so i could just push it home. Stupid car.... I saved up my money and bought myself a 2000 Ford Mustang now. Sucks gas like crazy, but it's a good fast car... |

You know it's funny, I just got a car. Today. My mom was like "hey i bought you a car" and i was like "does it have a cd player" and she was like "oh you're grateful." It's this white honda. I think she said it's an accord. It was $3,000. I have no knowledge of cars or anything. It has an oil leak. I'm a horrible driver. |

10.4, Yiffy Kitten? Geez. Mine's better than that, and it's probably in need of a few repairs. (Although the city/country splits are pretty severe... like, if I drive mostly highways, I squeeze roughly another 100 miles out of a tank.) And I don't think the speedometer goes any higher than 100... Anya/Weasel: Were you trying to get on Pimp My Ride? If not, WHY? |

I have a car. It's a 1984 Buick Century Limited with around 50,000 miles. I'm actually going to see this other car, a 1991 Oldsmobile Ninty-Eight Regency...which might become a new car for me...if it's not a tank, and it at least has to have a casette player. |

In Europe, the transport system is well done and well, you don't have a lot of space to park cars. In America, there's a lot less transport system. Stupid Quebec says: Use public transport ... I can't there's barely any here in a town of 50000 people. (1 bus, every hour or 2 ...) As for car, I have 3 right now (yes, 1 person, 3 cars) 92 Golf Diesel (never sold in the US) (The 50mpg car) 92 VW Cabriolet (the topless car) 86 VW Scirocco (The parts car going bye bye) I'm planning on buying a Purple 1996 or 1997 Passat TDI Syncro (another car not sold in the US) |

I'll be eligible for my license in August and, God willing, that's when I'll get it . I have an appointment for the test on my birthday, but I know at least one person who failed his first try and I'd rather not follow . My brother's leaving for Iona College in September, so his '90 Pontiac Grand Prix will be mine. It runs well enough and is not a total eyesore, but the 194,000 miles worry me a bit . |
