I'm getting a new computer but to tell you the truth I don't know what a good computer is.... so anyways I was hoping if someone could tell me what each thing is for and if this is a good computer...

Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 3.06 GHz with 533 MHz front side bus
Microsoft Windows XP Home
256MB Dual ChannelDDR SDRAMat 333MHz
17" Flatscreen CRT Monitor
Integrated Intel 3D Extreme Graphics 2
16X DVD-ROM Drive
48X CD-RW Drive (2nd bay)

Basically I want a computer that can run games such as Diablo 2 and work with websites which includes using photoshop.

Ok, let's go over this:

1. Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 3.06 GHz - Pretty good, although a computers "goodness" level is not measured by the processor alone.
2. 256MB Dual ChannelDDR SDRAMat 333MHz - Uh, you're going to want more. Thankfully, that wouldn't be a huge problem.
3. 17" Flatscreen CRT Monitor - ...better than a non-flatscreen 17" monitor. Just keep in mind that it's a flat-screen, not flatpanel (super thin monitor).
4. Integrated Intel 3D Extreme Graphics 2 - This is, without a doubt, the biggest problem with the entire package. If you want to play any of the big name games coming out, you'll need to upgrade and get an actual video card.
5. 16X DVD-ROM Drive & 48X CD-RW Drive (2nd bay) - Just fine.

Is there anyone in your house that's computer-knowledgeable? If so, that person can help you to increase your RAM and get a real video card. If not, then you'll have to look into it and learn about it yourself. And with regards to the video card, if you don't have AGP slots on your motherboard, then forget it.

But I think it'll have no problem running Diablo 2. I was running it on an Intel Pentium 4 2.2GHz and with those "Integrated Onboard Extreme 3D graphics" crap or whatever, and it was just fine.

Was this ordered online? If so, can you provide the link? We can look into that whole AGP thing for you. (My Dell Pentium 4 2.2GHz did NOT have AGP slots, so don't count on it.)

Looks pretty good, but I have some suggestions...

1) Get XP Pro. Home sucks a lot.
2) Integrated video = teh suck, especially by Intel.
3) More RAM would be a good idea if you plan to run really high-end games or a lot of stuff at once (which includes really big images or images with a LOT of layers in Photoshop).

Thanks for the reply and I found these comps in a paper that was sent to our house anyways you can upgrade the video card to a '128 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 Grapics Card with TV-Out and DVI' for an extra $35 would that be better then the original and would it be able to basically run games without trouble?

It would be well worth the $35 to get that video card.

As for playing any new games, no. HL2 or Doom3 are out of the question. Of course, even the Intel onboard shit can play Diablo II but anything made within the last 2-3 years can play a non-3D game like that.

If the ONLY game you want to play is Diablo II that's good enough, but if you're looking at real games like GTA, Battlefield, Halo, UT, or Mafia (which is getting popular on the PC again since its console release), then you'll need more. If you want to play an upcoming title like HalfLife2, or Doom 3, you'll need to follow suggestions in the other video card thread.

As for the processor and RAM, ehhh...
A 533MHz FSB P4 3.06 without Hyperthreading is far slower than a much cheaper AMD Athlon XP 3200+, and NO Pentium4 can even hold a candle to the Athlon64's. I highly suggest AMD systems because they perform much better for much less cash.

256MB dual channel DDR333 means you get 2 128MB sticks of PC2700. This SUCKS. I don't know hoe many dimm slots the machine has but it will NOT be over 4, which means that if you want a CHEAP upgrade, the best you can do is another 2x 128MB sticks for $40, and if you want to upgrade in the future, you'll need to throw them away. I suggest at LEAST 512MB in ANY dual-channel form.

Edit: And unless you plan on doing something like dual processing, Home edition is fine (which brings up a point: NEVER buy a Hyperthreading CPU with WinXP Home, it's the dumbest thing ever. The hyperthreading is loaded like a 2nd CPU, and Home will not support it, thus meaning your advantage is wasted).

Alright after reading your post I've went from a $799 computer to the third most expensive in the paper, the $1299 computer. I'll list the shit that comes with this one and according to the paper I'm reading this computer is made for 'intense gaming' and 'graphics'.

Intel pentium 4 processor with HT technology at 3.0GHz with 800MHz front side bus - Thats good according to what all you are saying
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
512 MB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz - And I assume this is better accoridng to what Yiffy Kitten said
120GB SATA hard drive (7200 RPM)
128 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Graphics Card with TV-Out and DVI

So would this computer be able to play the newer games as well or am I still fucked and need to upgrade....

I would never pick Intel. Yiffy Kitten said it too, AMD is much better for much less cash. My AMD can run almost the latest games (Halo for example, but on lowgraphics and 800x600) and I've had it for 2years or so now and I even got a shitty Geforce2 mx200 32mb.

And who the hells picks up WinXP with the comp package? You just burn it for christsakes.

I'd also pick an ATI graphics card rather than Geforce, cheaper and most of the times better.

Wrath... try to get someone that knows a lot about computer to help you pick up separate parts... Usually, package computer sucks

And try to wait for event like PC fair or something similar so you can get powerful yet cheap computer parts

Wrath: It still sucks ass. The 5200 Ultra is the worst part of it. A P4 2.4GHz w/o Hyperthreading and with a 533 Bus would anihilate that system if it had a GeForce4 Ti, Radeon 9600 Pro, etc!

If you can play BF and Halo, I'd probably not call it "Damn near perfect myself - you probably run:
640x480, 16-bit color, and get terrible framerates, or even higher and get well under 10FPS;
Low-quality textures
Low distance settings
Etc etc... in other words, stuff I wouldn't be able to tolerate!

AMD Athlon XP 1.1ghz
256mb ram
8gb & 20gb HDs
CD-RW drive & DVD drive
17" CRT monitor - non-flat screen
Windows XP Pro
32mb system ram shared for video (my 128mb geforce fx 5200 PCI isn't installed)

This should be faster than the 3 3/4 year old P3 500mhz brick, but I'm not sure how much. The main goal here was to increase speed at a low cost without reformatting (N64 emulation also). I already own KOTOR and Halo on Xbox, don't worry about that.

Any suggestions for games? Ones that require both the keyboard and mouse to be moved at the same time are tough for me. Simple controls are a must. Tron 2.0 looks interesting though.

Being normally a console gamer (especially GCN), not many PC titles are worth playing more than once IMO. I usually end up just leaving them all over the place.

I still don't get it why they still sell computers with 256 Megabytes of RAM. Sometimes I have been considiring getting even more memory becuse 512M of ram isn't enough sometimes even for me. I hate it when the computer uses the swap file to much.

Simcity 4 comes to mind, but you must have a powerful computer for that game...

well even if you did have 1 gig of ram you'd still end up using swap....

mostly because if a program is really inactive it just gets shoved to swap so windows uses the memory as a "file cache" cause it -thinks- it makes your computer faster, and in most cases it does help... but I'd just assume force all programs into main memory at all times, and have a lower file cache
