I'm looking for a good, reliable, free (hopefully) program to play DVDs from my DVD-ROM drive. If we're going to get specific, I want something that'll let me capture screens and save them.

What do you people here use, if you watch DVDs on your PC?

I'm pretty sure Windoze Media can do that. What OS are you using?

You need a recent version of Media Player and codec on your PC for Media Player to play DVDs.
Without one, Media Player just complains that you haven't got one.
It's either prohibited by law, or a half arsed effort from MS. Although the latter is attractive, I bet it's the former.

I've got Media Player running my DVDs now, but there's no "screen capture" option anywhere.

Are you saying it's illegal to capture screens from DVDs?

(sorry, I'm using Windows XP)

Try Print Screen, or Alt+Print Screen in fullscreen mode. I've heard they did something to block that (which would REALLY suck, I fail to see how it'd be illegal) but a friend of mine's always sending him pictures of WMP playing a DVD and they come out fine.

print-screen doesn't work whenever I tried it. if you hit the key, then paste it into paint (or any other image editor), the part where the DVD screen was becomes... nothing! transparent outside of the context of the image itself. disabling hardware acceleration in WMP doesn't help.

I'm with kazooie on this one. I'd like such a program too. the DeCSS source is floating around on the internet, so I figure someone's made a DVD-playing application by now.

I'd recommend Cyberlink PowerDVD XP. Unfortunatly, it's not free, but there is a free trial. It does have a working screen capture feature.
I believe it outputs full resolution BMPs, but not quite sure. It's been a while since I last used it...

And another good feature too... you can load IFOs and VOBs straight from the hard-disk! Excellent for testing DVDs before you burn them... it saved me a couple of DVD+Rs!

If you have an nVidia card (dunno if it works for others, or if ATi has one) you can go to nvidia.com and dl nvdvd. It isn't free either but has a trial period, and if you have an nVidia card, hardware acceleration and image quality is superb. And of course, it has a screen capture button
