I bought a laptop that came with xp pre-installed.
I hate XP.

I've looked and looked in google and the only site that says anything relating to reverting to FAT32 is on the MS homepage and it says it's impossable once NTFS has taken over.

Of cource we are talking about computers so impossable is a bullshit word.

So can ANYONE give me a link or coach me so I can get win98 up and running.

I won't make any boasts that I'm good or anything, but as long as you don't mind losing all the data on the drive, then you might be able to stick the drive into another computer and use fdisk to erase it's Primary Dos partition, if XP uses one. After that, you should be able to rebuild a new partition, and format the drive as being NTFS. You'd probably need to get a converter for the IDE cable though.

PartitionMagic has the ability to convert NTFS volumes to FAT32, however PM doesn't have a good track record when it comes to 'safe'

If you buy PartitionMagic (or... get a free unlimited 'trial' that's not official *ahem*), back up your data before trying to convert to FAT32. If that ends up not working, you can reinstall Windows with FAT32 as the filesystem

If you need to back up anyway, just back up, format as FAT32, re-install, and restore from the backup.

A simple conversion from NTFS to FAT32 is possible but it will not always work because FAT32 is less advanced. FAT32 has a maximum filesize of 4GByte and sometimes filenames change as well when you convert NTFS to FAT32.

You want win 98 over win xp...

The stupidity of computer users never ceases to amaze me.

That having been ranted, you cannot convert to FAT32 from NTFS reliably. It CAN be done but I do NOT recommend it at ALL. It's like putting M&M's on an SUV for tires.

you have a pre-installed computer? if you have a bootable win98 OS CD...then you can use that CD to boot up the computer, type a:\fdisk and frag the NTFS partition, create a new partition, format it to FAT32 and install away...

I'd like to see your reasons for why XP is better than 98.

Uh, read... It came with XP, and he doesn't want to wipe the partition.

Yiffy Kitten, consider the specs of his laptop before you assume XP is the best solution for it. 98 is a lot less demanding and can be made damn fast and damn stable with some hacking. (It's no 95B, but... )

the guy has yet to respond, so how do you know wiping the partition is a no-no? plus, the laptop has XP pre-installed, unless he has started to use it and has files on it, there isn't anything on the partition worth saving...

I converted my NTFS to FAT32 and it worked fine. I didn't loose anything nor did it screw up. Convert it with PartitionMagic, that's how I did it.

Why would he want to convert it if he didn't care what was on it?

I once needed that because some times i needed to see the partition from dos (r/w not only read) when winXP became unstable, and to use a program called Jum's 3D editor to edit tmd, which are 3d models of psx boot logos. It didn't work over win2000 and over winxp the mouse was too sluggy. If he wanna use MS-DOS like programs, he may use some tools like DOSBOX to run programs that are based in DOS. That are ones of the reasons that i remember the need for downgrading to fat32. But just i'm speculating
